2020.09.24 16:37 roboto_jonesBuilt my First PC as 31st Birthday to Myself - My Full Experience : Specs, Purchase (from Australia), 7 hours live-streamed Build, NO POST, Troubleshoot, & Lesson - Super Long Post!
Photos of my FIRST PC Build! & a photo of me with the laptop it's replacing! Story: Initially I wanted to buy a pre-built PC for my 31st birthday but after reading some comments and posts (especially here on buildapc), I decided to build one myself - to save some $$$ but to also as a learning experience; oh boy did I learn some lessons. The PC was built to replace my aging 2013 ASUS G750JX. Primary use is for Gaming - WoW: Shadowlands, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo : Infinite, & Assassin's Creed : Norway Simulator. No Microsoft Flight Sim here. Secondary for Work - Autodesk Revit, Rhinoceros 5, 3DS Max, SketchUp, & Vray. Occassionaly for Streaming and Video editting - Twitch Studio, Adobe Rush. After watching/reading a lot of guides, parts selected, and parts arrived - I decided to live-stream my entire build: YouTube link of my stream reduced from 7 hours to 1 hour. I also thought I'd share my experience with you guys by making a SUPER LONG post. So like days when games guides were giant TXT files from GameFAQS, I divided this into CHAPTERS! Chapters: A001 - PC SpecsA002 - Specs Lesson / Alternates OptionsB001 - Budget Info & Store Choice - from an Australian buyer perspectiveB002 - Spec vs Price Comparison - at time of purchase on August 22B003 - Delivery & Arrival date of Packages - Guess which package arrived the quickestC001 - Build Guides - some tutorials that I found usefulD001 - My 7 hours Build - Live Streamed!D002 - NO POST! & Troubleshooting - with the help from one of my viewers.E001 - Post-Build & General Lessons LearntE002 - Next Upgrades Selection & WishlistF001 - Special Thanks & Shameless Self-Promo Just Ctrl+F and search the code "AXXX" for that specific chapter and you'll jump right to it! // A001 - PC Specs // PC Part Picker list : https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/rXzGWb

STORAGE :SSD - Kingston A2000 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State DriveHDD - Western Digital Blue 2 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive
PSU : Corsair RM (2019) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
CASE : NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case
// A002 - Specs Lesson / Alternates Options // I won't go to Part-by-Part because honestly, I'm no expert - I'll link to a guide if I find one. These are just some of the things I noted after my build. Choosing your Parts Lessons / Tips :
Always check your parts compatibility!PCPartPicker.com is a great site to check each part's compatibility.
Make sure your motherboard is the suitable choice for your CPU - AMD / Intel
Is your case suitable with your parts? Check if it's suitable for your ATX, mATX, ITX MoBo.
The NZXT case I chose has a USB Type C on the Front Panel, not all MoBo supports USB-C port.
Check the overall dimensions (sizes) of your parts. Your RAM may be too tall for your CPU Air Cooler. The GPU may be too big to even fit in your case. Will your AIO Cooler radiator fit the front or top of your case?
Don't cheap out on PSU. PCPartPicker will show the Estimated Wattage, get one say 1.5x than estimated, just in case. Mine was roughly 443W, so I went with a 650W PSU.
Get an NVME SSD for your OS. It's ridiculously fast and quite possibly the Best Bang For Buck in terms of Performance decisions you'll make.
Know your priorities! Performance? Tight Budget? Availability? Aesthetics? Plan your parts accordingly.
Read / Watch Reviews of Parts! They may warn you what to look out with specific parts. Example: A review mentioned that ASUS TUF RX 5700 XT have been found to run quite hot - that I didn't know before buying it.
Alternate Options - Some parts I considering as alternate to fit a lower budget:
CPU COOLER : Stock Air Cooler from CPU. May be sufficient for non-intensive uses & cases with great airflow.
At time of purchase, the 30 GPUs Series were still rumored, with only leaked images. So I went with an RX 5700 XT because it felt like it was the best Bang for the Buck and that it would be a longer wait if I wanted the Nvidia 30 series or AMD 6000 series. If time is not a constraint for you, I'd say it's definitely worth waiting for the new GPUs. // B001 - Budget Info & Store Choice // I initially wanted to buy a Pre-Built PC but after deciding to build my own, I just used the initial budget for my parts.
Budget: AUD$2,400 - not including delivery, just on parts.
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Being in Australia, a giant island away from everyone else, parts are more expensive. Most tech reviews will mention the USD prices and unfortunately it's not a 1:1 currency conversion - so set expectations accordingly.
Store Choice: PCCG , Scorptec, Centrecom, PCByte
I specifically chose these stores because I've made purchases from there before and they're local. I wanted to order locally to avoid any international shipping and direct customer service if I faced any issues. I also just wanted to help out local stores as much as I could during this pandemic season - eventhough business for e-retailers are booming right now. Other Australian stores worth checking out are: Mwave & PLE & SKYCOMP // B002 - Spec vs Price Comparison // A quick schedule I made for each parts by the selected AU Stores I've purchased from: BOLD items are the lowest price found. Italics items were sold-out / pre-order listed.Prices shown were from purchase on August 25.Price listed as Australian Dollars - AUD$Price with (*) means the place I bought the part from.
HDD Storage : Western Digital Blue 2 TB 3.5" 5400RPM HDD
PSU : Corsair RM (2019) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
CASE : NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case
CPU COOLER : Corsair H100x 57.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

TOTAL PRICE OF LOWEST & AVAILABLE PARTS = AUD$2296 By the cost comparison, PCByte was the best place to purchase IF they had all the stock - which sadly wasn't the case. So I ended purchasing the parts from PCCG, Centrecom, PCByte separately, which the total parts costs was $1 higher than the total at PCByte. The most parts I ordered from was at CentreCom for their free delivery. PCCG was the only place that had the Case & PSU, so I ordered it from there as well. AS A TEST, I ordered another 'Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18' from AmazonUS for $99.20 + $16.50. To see how fast it would arrive and 32GB RAM would be great to have. Boy oh boy, the $4 savings than the price at CentreCom was not worth it. TOTAL COST INCLUDING DELIVERY = AUD$2,442.70 // B003 - Delivery & Arrival date of Packages// A summary from Order Date to Shipment Arrival for each store:
PCCG - Total Spent: $358 + $21 Delivery
Order Date: 25.08.2020
Shipment Arrival : 28.08.2020 - 3 Days
CentreCom - Total Spent: $1105 + $0 Delivery
Order Date: 25.08.2020
Shipment Arrival: 02.09.2020 - 8 Days
PCByte - Total Spent: $833 + $10 Delivery
Order Date: 25.08.2020
Shipment Arrival: 28.08.2020 - 3 Days
AmazonUS - Total Spent: $99.2 + $16.50 Delivery
Order Date: 29.08.2020
Shipment Arrival: 04.09.2020 - 6 Days
One thing to note for my orders with CentreCom & PCByte, I decided to pay via Bank Transfer to save from the 1-2% surcharge on payments made via PayPal or Credit Card but then it took those stores time to verify the payment has been received before shipping the order out. PC Byte was quick to process the payment, only requiring a Transaction Receipt to verify. CentreCom took much longer which resulted in the slower shipment than the AmazonUS from Whitestown, Indiana, USA to Melbourne, Australia. // C001 - Build Guides // The number 1 that helped me was RTFM - READ THEFRIENDLYMANUAL. (Thanks Jay) Most of things you need to know on the part and how to install is mentioned in in their respective manual. There are general information that applies to each part but they can vary slightly from different manufacturers - so read carefully. Again, I won't go through part-by-part guides. Just some guides & information that I found useful. Here's some of the tutorial videos that helped me with my build:
Wishing for a Philips head in your Swiss Army Knife aside, there are a lot of advice here amongst the criticism of the build by The Verge. Just make sure you watch the other actual guides first. Again, this is not a guide video - just a list of what NOT to do.
A great guide on installing Windows and making sure your Disk Drives are installed properly. The TechSource also touches on this but Jay'z video highlight on the Disk Drives alone is worth mentioning this tutorial.
// D001 - My 7 hours Build - That I Live Streamed! // Here's an edited down version of the stream from 7 hours to 1 hour & minus the few times my recording dropped for some reason. So I did watch all the guides and videos listed previous chapter. Also, read the manuals of most of the products online before even receiving the parcels. Still, I was a nervous a mess! I did buy a whole set of tiny screw bits for $19 because it has that weird bendy bit for hard to reach spots. 100% not required at all, definitely an overkill on my part. A simple breakdown of the video, this is NOT a guide - just a summary and some handy tips I recalled:
Installed as much parts as you could onto the MoBo - the CPU, RAM, & NVME SSD.
Make sure the CPU is placed oriented correctly!
Check the RAM is installed in the right order! RAM may require some force!
Make sure you got the right standoff for your NVME SSD. Don't leave one below in the middle of the NVME as it may damage it.
Prepared the AIO CPU Cooler (Corsair H100X) - made sure the right brackets & mounting brackets were in place.
Read the manual!
Don't touch face of the cooler! Leave the cover on.
Installed the fans onto the radiator - in a pull configuration. Just to make the fans visible honestly.
Installed the radiator onto the radiator mounting bracket from case (NZXT H510).
Check your case's manual!
Recording Dropped! Prepared my case before I placed my MoBo.
Install the IO Shield. Mine is pre-installed, so don't need to worry about it.
Checked the right standoffs are in-place to receive my ATX MoBo. DON'T leave any unnecessary standoff on the case, it may DAMAGE your MoBo.
Placed my MoBo into the case.
Angle it slight for an easier insert.
Screw it place. Don't force the screw! As long as it's secure, it's sufficient.
Recording Returns! Installed my AIO Cooler (Corsair H100X).
It has this weird earing mounting thing that hooks onto the existing bracket on the board.
Make sure the logo/face of the AIO is oriented accordingly!
Installed the radiator mount back into the case.
Prepared my Fully Modular PSU - Again, RTFM - Read The Flippin' Manual!
Installed the needed Cables.
This where I should've installed my cable extensions, if I had any.
Installed the PSU onto the case.
Make sure to orient it correct! Mine was with the fan blowing to the bottom of the case.
Took out the Hard Disk Drive Cage & screwed the HDD into the cage.
In hindsight, should've done this first before the PSU as the cables got in my way.
Your case may vary! Check your manual.
CABLES TIME! Checked the orientation of where each cable would go from the back of the case and to the front.
Again, read the manual!
A good thing about my case (NZXT H510) is that the Front Panel connector comes in a handy single-piece bundle that makes it easy to connect.
Connected all the MoBo cables. Always check the orientation! Look at the empty keys slot, any square face indents, clips, etc. Be careful!
Installed my GPU (ASUS TUF RX 5700 XT) - it is a hefty boi.
The GPU I chose has a 6pin+8pin PCIe Cable bit which confused me for a bit.
I should've - READ THE MANUAL!
Double Checked everything is securely installed
Plugged into Power & Switch the PSU to On
GPU LED turned on.
No weird noises - thankfully!
Pressed the Power Button AND...
// D002 - NO POST! & Troubleshooting - with the help from one of my viewers. // NO POST! - Which sank my heart instantly. Shoutout to one of my viewers, haxnetTech, who told me to look at the LED on the MoBo next to the RAM, which highlighted "DRAM" and basically guide me through the troubleshoot. Because I had 4 sticks of RAM installed. The issue could've been a lot of things : RAM sticks might not have been seated securely, a faulty RAM stick or multiple of them, OR faulty Motherboard. So troubleshooting began as follows:
Removed all 4 RAM sticks.
Reseat all 4 RAM. NO POST.
Removed all 4 RAM again.
Separated each pair based on their serial numbers - CentreCom pair and the Amazon pair.
Installed the CentreCom pair in the A2 & B2. YAY!POST!
Installed the Amazon pair in the A1 & B1. NO POST!
Removed all the RAM and placed the Amazon pair in A2 & B2. NO POST!
I did test each RAM individually in A2 and found only ONE of the Amazon pair was faulty.
Because I wanted to return it, obviously I returned it as a pair.
Removed the Amazon Pair and reinstalled the CentreCom pair. YAY! POST!
Proceeded to install my Windows.
Made sure to install the OS in the NVME SSD, NOT the HDD.
After 7 hours live-stream, thanked my stream.
Ate a Chicken Kebab.
My initial plan was to have 32GB Memory (4x 8GB) and having to return a pair, I ended up running off 16GB for a while. I did have a concern that maybe I had issues with my A1 & B1 RAM slots on my MoBo, so I ended up ordering another pair 32GB Memory (2x 16GB) to fill out my remaining slot and test it out. Worst case, I'll just run off the A2 & B2 with the 2x 16GB pair. MEMORY : Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2X16GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C18 1.35V Desktop Memory BlackCOST : AUD$222.00 + $15.80 Delivery - from SKYCOMP. The only Australian store that had stock.DELIVERY : Ordered - 08.09.2020. Arrived - 14.09.2020. 6 days. RAM arrived, installed the 2x 16GB memory in A2 & B2. Installed the CentreCom 2x 8GB pair in A1 & B1. TADAA!I am officially running at 48GB Memory. // E001 - Post-Build & General Lessons Learnt // I spent most of the time after my live-stream tidying the cables at the back of the PC and setting up my usual software & games. Tweezered Zip-tied all the loose cables as neatly as I could. I did try and do some basic overclocking with some guides on YouTube and Guru3D recommendations BUT I don't think I will include it in here as I am not that well-versed on the topic. So here are some lessons I learnt from my build, aside from some of the tips I mentioned in the previous Chapters:
Again, Know Your Priorities! Aesthetics, Performance, Time, & Budget
If you are patient, it WILL be worth it to wait for the release / availability of newer, better performing parts.
If you are patient, it WILL be cheaper during sales or secondhand stock.
If time and stock is a constraint, what you CAN buy the parts you need at that moment will be your best option. You don't need to defend yourself to internet commentors.
This is YOUR PC and your money; do with it as you wish.
Download the Windows Installer & Drivers Before You Build!
The drivers are dependent on your MoBo & GPU. Just Google them accordingly.
Having them ready makes setting up your PC a lot quicker.
Watch Reviews for The Part You're Interested In - if you can find it. You may find an alternative that offer a similar performance for less. You may find a better performing part that's worth the extra change.
Read the Manuals! Again & again. This WILL give you
Relax & Take Your Time! It may seem intimidating but it really isn't if you break down to one step at a time.
Keep Things Organised. Make sure to sort your parts, screws, boxes in a neat order. It's easier to find things you need when you know where it is.
Plan Accordingly! Have an idea what you need to do next part-by-part and what to look out for.
I should've installed the Cables before installed the PSU rather than trying to fit that second PCIe cable for the GPU after screwing it in PSU.
Have somewhat of an idea of how the airflow will work in your case; the air intake & exhaust directions.
Keep Things, In General! - if you can. You will need literally EVERYTHING that came in the box of the part if you need to return it for whatever reason.
Watch Your Static! I am paranoid, so I got a static bracelet & touched my Work PC PSU regularly.
Watch Your Strength! You don't need to be a jacked dude to screw all the parts together. Be cautious, often just a firm tug with confidence. You MAY damage your MoBo and other parts if forced too harshly.
Have Lunch! Don't be like me and skip it like I did.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. The internet is great place to find useful advice and information - from the right source.
Or ask your partner to hold the light and cables while you place the GPU in.
Or hopefully a random viewer will come and assist you BUT do take stranger advice with a pinch of salt, not everyone is nice and/or know what they're doing.
// E002 - Next Upgrades Selection & Wishlist // PC Building is an addiction, you'll immediately look at things that to upgrade your perfectly functioning setup. I am officially one of them. I even made a schedule of my wishlist and store prices - in hopes that if there was ever I sale and huge price drop (in Australian Dollars AUD$) :
SSD STORAGE: Gigabyte AORUS NVMe Gen4 1 TB
RGB Case Fans: Corsair LL120 63 CFM 120 mm Fans
OR Lian Li SL120
3080 GPU: MSI GeForce RTX3080 VENTUS OC
OR Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB AORUS MASTER
1440p Monitor: AOC CQ32G2E
OR ViewSonic VX3258-2KPC-MHD
With my type of work, high memory GPUs are great but a 3090 is ridiculously expensive of an expense - so a 3080 would be nice step up. I am happy enough with my current GPU to wait for next generation, maybe a 3080 Super or a 6000 Series ST model. Reason why I included the monitors is because the current monitor setup provided by Work is a decent 1440 60hz monitor that's been colour calibrated. Great for work, not so much for gaming. After my build, I won't be buying upgrades anytime soon. But hey, you can't have a dream without a goal. // F001 - Special Thanks & Shameless Self-Promo // Thank you for checking out my post - especially you guys that read ALL of it. Special Thanks to:
2020.09.24 08:01 tayzerr98First PC build, $2500 AUD budget
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I play a lot of tac shooters, used to play cs go and now I heavily play valorant. I’m in stage 4 lockdown, I also work from home and that involves accessing a Remote Desktop to my PC at the office. I also do lots of multiple tab browsing on the internet.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$2500 AUD ($1800 USD)
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Everything that goes into the PC. I don’t need a monitor, mouse, keyboard etc...
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Australia, Victoria, Melbourne
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
144hz monitor, RAZER viper, Logitech keyboard and a qck+ mousepad
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Not sure, I would need to do more research on over clocking. Could anyone give me tips?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I don’t need much storage, 800gb SSD would be plenty. Don’t need a hard drive.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Medium-larger size case so I don’t have any issues building it. black.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
2020.09.19 14:00 noparkingfriendNew Political party proposed.
https://old.reddit.com/AusPol/comments/ivr85k/new_political_party_proposed/?ref=share&ref_source=link I found the following comment in the comments section at the bottom of this article on the macrobusiness website https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2020/09/jobs-lift-all-about-bullshit/ Macrobusiness Member "Gunnamatta" proposed a new political party and outlined policy. I think that there is merit to the suggested policies and would make for an interesting discussion. Disclosure I am not "Gunnamatta". I am not a member of the macrobusiness website. I am just a regular reader of the non-paywall articles. I have copied and pasted the comment from "Gunnamatta" below: GunnamattaMEMBERSeptember 18, 2020 at 2:03 pm That’s not bullshit………. This is Bullshit – Bullshit Australia! At this stage of the game it simply begs the question of whether it is the policy of the current Australian LNP government, headed by PM Scott Morrison, to completely trash the competitive basis of the Australian economy and to inflict lasting economic pain on all Australians. Further to that, if we think it was an ALP government (Gillard’s) which OK’d the Gladstone white elephant, and governments of both flavours which have looked the other way while Australian gas which once meant amongst the cheapest gas prices in the world for Sydney and Melbourne, and therefore cheap electricity, has become about the world’s most expensive – while both sides of politics try to nudge coal seam gas and fracking on a population all too aware of the environmental and health costs this entails – then the following question simply arise. Does Australia’s body politic – both mainstream sides including the Lberal Party, the National Party and the Australian Labor Party – have at its core an economic policy of completely trashing the competitive basis of the Australian economy and to inflict lasting economic pain on all Australians? Have Australian public sector data gathering, regulatory, and policy formulation organisations and departments been so corrupted that they do not identify the above? Have they been so neutered that they cannot report the above to Australian politicians? And at that point Are Australian political and public sector elites acting in the best interests of Australians? Are they accountable for acting in the interests and explaining their actions to Australians to a sufficient degree enabling Australians to feel that their politicians and senior policy makers are accountable to them? ….and if they are not, How can they be made more so? It is time for open revolt. I think it is time for a new political party which I would call putatively Bullshit Australia – the party to identify and deal with Australian Bullshit and to promote informed and data backed decisionmaking throughout the political and administrative bodies of Australia, and to hold politicians, public officials and corporate interests to account for past decisions made, starting with a permanent standing Australian Corruption Commission. (Edit removed members names) I propose we aim initially – the next Federal election – at trying to get up 4 Senators from each state. I propose we get as far as we can up the nose of the current ‘elites’ by constipating their policy platforms in the Senate. I think/suspect we currently lack women……. Key Slogan ‘This is Bullshit!’ Men and Women of Australia, Have you ever wondered about your energy costs ………‘This is Bullshit!’ Do you wonder why your salary hasnt gone up in donkeys years? ‘This is Bullshit!’ Do you work in a large organisation wondering why psychopaths inhabit the upper floors and you get stuck with meaningless KPIs? ‘This is Bullshit!’ Do you worry about if your kids will get a decent education in a government school while ‘elite’ private schools get more funding from all levels of government than your kids school does? ‘This is Bullshit!’ Do you wonder why your governments keep banging on about immigration needed for skills shortages when kids with Master degrees are joining the military as base grade grunts because there is nothing else for them to get into? ‘This is Bullshit!’ Do you wonder why Australia, the worlds largest gas exporter has the worlds most expensive gas in Sydney and Melbourne? ‘This is Bullshit!’ Do you wonder why foreign nationals traipsed on in and laundered money through Australian real estate so your kids need to move to Campbelltown to be able to afford a house, and hack out a 2 hour commute to a peanut paying gig every day? ‘This is Bullshit!’ Every time a mainstream politicians opens his mouth (or her mouth) in the public domain, just point out ‘This is Bullshit!’ Draft Policy Platform – for discussion/arguing about/ data provision I propose that the Bullshit Australia and the Macrobusiness cognoscenti run a full campaign in the upcoming election to get ourselves elected as the swing players, running on a platform revolving around (with negotiations/debate/argy bargy) the below……. – which would at least offer some sort of genuine left and data backed – and openly transparent – presence in parliament Policy Positions Constitution · Enshrine Medicare into Constitution · Enshrine ABC funding into Constitution · Enshrine Australian Bureau of Statistics funding into Constitution · Enshrine political party funding transparency into Constitution · Enshrine freedom from foreign influence legislation into constitution · Enshrine requirement for all candidates for every election in Australia to be approved by AEC prior to standing for parliament · Enshrine a National Crime & Corruption Commission into Constitution and give it investigatory powers. Taxation · End negative gearing · End capital gains tax dispensation · End health insurance rebate · Implement Federal Land tax · Remove PAYE taxation for those earning under 55K (but retain/create Medicare (4%), Defence (2%), ABS (1%) and ABC (1%) levy · Inclusion of family home in determination of access to the aged pension where the home is worth more than 500k. · Development and maintenance of publicly available database on Australian taxpayers [companies & individuals] Economic and Monetary Policy · Reinclusion of employee and community representatives on RBA Board. · Requirement for RBA to report quarterly to Parliament on monetary policy in relation to wages and housing costs · Requirement for RBA to report quarterly to Parliament on the effective use of taxpayers funds in relation to support for Australian banks and financial system entities. · Requirement for RBA, Treasury, and other government agencies (including ABS) to develop standards and monitor quality of life issues being faced by Australians (both on average and by decile) and report on how policies being adopted by them influence a range of demographics · Mandate the creation of new entity to be called the Australian personal public and corporate debt commission to produce analysis on the debt, indebtitude and debt servicing of Australians and Australian entities This organisation is to have representatives of the RBA, Treasury, State governments, local governments, retail banks and community organisations at a board level. · Requirement for RBA to report quarterly to Parliament on money creation and the beneficiaries of money creation over the preceding quarter and year, and forecast such into the future. Housing · Commence federal government building housing · Implement competitive GST Bonus payable to states which do best on housing affordability and housing creation · Enshrine right to housing into Constitution · Enshrine a National Probity and Veracity test for all funds used for housing purchases. 2020.09.19 05:34 1-100000000New Political party proposed.
I found the following comment in the comments section at the bottom of this article on the macrobusiness website https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2020/09/jobs-lift-all-about-bullshit/ Macrobusiness Member "Gunnamatta" proposed a new political party and outlined policy. I think that there is merit to the suggested policies and would make for an interesting discussion. Disclosure I am not "Gunnamatta". I am not a member of the macrobusiness website. I am just a regular reader of the non-paywall articles. I have copied and pasted the comment from "Gunnamatta" below:
GunnamattaMEMBERSeptember 18, 2020 at 2:03 pm That’s not bullshit………. 2020.09.03 02:04 SlowRyderDD: 10 Reasons that $CRSA Is the Most Underrated/Undervalued Upcoming SPAC Merger
I've obsessively been doing DD on F45 (merging into CRSA; warrants: CRSAW) since early July. I've spent at least 50-100 hours picking it apart from every angle, and I've been dollar cost averaging into the shares and warrants for several weeks. I have personally concluded that this is the most underrated/undervalued SPAC merger because people have been temporarily tricked by Covid / the market to not actually look into it. I've never done a post like this before, but I decided that since I've done the DD and no one else seemed to be, I guess I'm the one to distill it for people to consider the sizable opportunity. The company is a cash cow that is rapidly growing an imposing global brand with an innovative and scalable model of high intensity interval training studios that use a patented software system to deliver a new daily HIIT workout to every global location via digital monitors on the studio walls. I think that the vast majority of investors have skipped past looking below the surface based on the reasonable assumption that "gym + covid = bad". I encourage you to take a few minutes to look below the surface here and make sure you're not missing a significant opportunity. I believe it is. The amount of info I could type out is more extensive than most would care to read, so I figured I'd break the key points down into a list of my favorite things about F45 as an investment opportunity. Additionally, I highly encourage you to spend 5-10 minutes reading the investor presentation hosted on Crescent Acquisition's website here.pdf). They did an excellent job of presenting the product, business model, financials, etc. I've accumulated a lot more information than I could lay out here, so feel free to ask any questions and I'll get to all of them as soon as possible. Here are ten of the reasons that I believe CRSA is the most underrated/undervalued SPAC with an upcoming merger:
1. It’s growing 40-50%+ per year.
The charts below show F45's revenue and EBITDA growth over the past few years, as well as projections for this year and next (see point #2 as a caveat to the projections, because their franchise sales numbers this year have actually proven significantly better than forecast here, which should also have a positive effect on revenue). As a franchise company, F45 makes most of their money from selling franchises and collecting monthly franchise fees. New franchises pay an establishment fee of up to $50k and purchase $120k in proprietary equipment from F45. Once opened, the franchises pay a $2500/month franchise fee. (Note that the difference between "Franchises Sold" and "Total Studios Open" on the chart below seems to primarily be a matter of the lag between a franchise agreement being signed and the franchise actually opening for business, rather than failed franchises which is what I thought initially.) https://preview.redd.it/zq6wclz3ntk51.png?width=2150&format=png&auto=webp&s=7eb89ae1b10e54fece71cb988d20216cbd002821 The slide below is interesting as well. This isn't from the investor presentation, but rather a March '19 franchise sales presentation. The item that intrigues me the most is that F45 surpassed Crossfit as the largest gym network in Australia within just four years of launching their first location...this is explosive growth, and the United States has now overtaken Australia as their largest and fastest growing market. Their product is clearly resonating with people, even if you've never heard of it yourself (as I hadn't). https://preview.redd.it/k5mvpqijntk51.png?width=2546&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a9ba503522252b2b0dcc5390b46e543aae3d264
2. Covid has not been nearly the significant setback that was feared.
As mentioned in the first point, the 2020 projections above have actually proven to be significantly conservative, which should increase 2021's projections as well. As you can see in the chart in the first point, F45 was projecting new franchise sales this year of 174 due to Covid. In their August 6, 2020 8K filing, they provided a significant update to this, but they haven't updated the projections slide to reflect the latest bullish information. Their 8/6 update stated that they sold 244 franchises so far in 2020 through July, including 124 in June/July alone. If you extrapolate out the monthly new franchise sales below, you can infer that they'll likely end up selling over 400 franchises this year, assuming the recent sales success continues. https://preview.redd.it/bdw786b5ntk51.png?width=2038&format=png&auto=webp&s=532cba1aea8dbf116e7a80493b3f59afb2ecdecf The 8/6 update further stated that 50 new studios opened from June through early August, and that 78% of the pre-covid franchise network was re-opened as of August 3, 2020 and that the median revenue per studios opened for seven weeks was back to 88% of pre-covid levels. Keep in mind that F45 makes their money from franchise fees, so the main factor is that studios are open and hopefully paying the full fee. Lastly on this point, CRSA is valuing F45 at less than half of their expected pre-covid IPO price. Robert Beyer, executive chairman of CRSA and founder of Crescent Capital Group ($28bn in AUM) had this to say on the conference call: "F45 has a steep growth trajectory, proven over seven years of opening more than 1,200 and selling nearly 2,000 franchises in more than 50 countries. The company has been profitable since inception, with extremely high cash flow margins, not only for the company but for its franchisees....This is simply one of the most exciting public market stories we’ve heard, with a valuation that is 30% to 50% below its peers and less than half the expected price of its previously planned IPO, which was interrupted by the worldwide lockdown only a few short months ago."
3. The business is successfully scaling globally (very quickly).
One of the most intriguing things to me about F45's growth and the investment opportunity is that F45 is proving that their model is scalable around the globe, something that most other fitness franchises have not achieved. The company's franchise sales team has grown from 6 to 34 members since 2019, with 18 in the Americas, three in Europe, three in the Middle East & Africa, and five in Asia, as well as five who cater to college, corporate, and military (F45s are rapidly popping up in college rec centers and soon on military bases). The chart below shows open and soon-to-open locations around the world. It's hard to tell on this map, but I believe it's 776 in the Americas (mainly USA), 124 in Europe, 8 in Africa, 200 in Asia, and 572 in Australia. (The company started in Australia and quickly penetrated that market. The fastest growth now is in the United States.) https://preview.redd.it/66dqonw6ntk51.png?width=672&format=png&auto=webp&s=1676d7873c6db4d0122b831ddac7793a2c254c9b
4. The celebrities who use, support, and invest in F45 make the brand sexy.
Mark Wahlberg is a key investor in F45 and will be on the board after the merger. Hugh Jackman trained for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men film series at F45. Other celebrities who use or have used F45 include Nicole Kidman, Channing Tatum, Nicole Ritchie, Sam Smith, Ricky Martin, Joel Madden, Russell Crowe, Teri Hatcher, and more. No offense at all to Planet Fitness and PF members, but I don't think a lot of celebrities are members there.
5. The franchisees pay for the company’s growth.
The company requires very little capital to fund their growth because the franchise establishment and equipment fees fund the buildout of each new F45 location and thus fund the company's growth. Warren Buffett has long preached that the best investments are companies that require very little capital to run their business. This is a prime example. In fact, the company doesn't really even need the capital from this merger. They've suggested how they may use it, and I'll get to that in a later point (it's bullish).
6. The company is easy to understand and follow.
You don't have to be a fitness nut or in the fitness industry to understand and follow this investment (I'm not a fitness nut or in the industry). Their business model is very simple. They make most of their money from franchise fees, as well as equipment packs. The main metric to watch is the number of franchises sold, as you can assume that each new franchise will add the following revenue: $50k establishment fee (there seems to be wiggle room with this depending on the deal), $120k equipment purchase, and $30k+ in annual recurring revenue from the monthly franchise fee. There's also a $25k franchise renewal fee after five years, and some other fees as well, including the anticipation of equipment pack refreshes. (Note on page 49 of theinvestor presentation.pdf) how this revenue is recognized...the establishment fee is amortized over ten years, so each franchise sold will add approximately $5k to revenue for the ten years after it's sold from the establishment fee, in addition to the monthly franchise fee.)
7. The company has some level of moat from patents.
F45 holds patents for the innovative technology it uses to power the studios and the global network: https://patents.justia.com/assignee/f45-training-pty-ltd. It is currently actively pursuing a case against an upstart in Australia that is using a model that is allegedly similar. I believe that F45 has tapped into a unique way to scale a HIIT training business into a global franchise model, and the success of that model is evident in the number of franchises being sold globally. It's great that they have a certain level of protection from others replicating this model. Assuming the patents prove defensible, it would be hard for competitors to replicate their success in their largest markets.
8. The product is so good that its members are often described as a cult.
If you search articles and social media, you'll often hear F45 described as a cult. Publicly traded companies with a cult following often do very well, such as Apple and Tesla. Here's the first paragraph of a 2020 GQ UK article about F45: "Whenever a friend of mine has suddenly walked back into my life looking better than they’ve ever looked before, the reason was always the same: F45. The cult exercise class, which can be found nearly anywhere in the world, just seems to work for people."
9. The potential for further growth is large enough that this is likely just in the first inning.
10. Corporate owned franchises will accelerate growth further.
I mentioned earlier in point five that F45 has suggested how they may use the company's merger cash, given that they don't need it for the current growth. They've suggested that they may acquire existing franchise locations or establish new company-owned locations. This is bullish because it will significantly accelerate their revenue growth. Instead of grossing ~$30k in franchise fee revenue each year per location, company-owned locations will likely contribute $275k-$500k in revenue per year. Planet Fitness has followed a similar strategy to this...they've turned to pursuing company-owned locations which has accelerated their revenue growth. ---------------------------------- Additional Notes:
The warrants (CRSAW) have an exercise price of $11.50 and the company can redeem them after the common shares (CRSA) have traded above $18 for 30+ days. The warrants were selling for $0.60-$0.65 last week. Warrants purchased at $0.60 would return over 900% if the common shares climb higher than $18 within five years of the merger. Based on F45's rapid growth, I believe that the probability of shares going from $10 to $18 in the next five years is high.
As of July 15, the net asset value per share of the common stock was $10.15. That means that if you're able to buy the shares for less than $10.15, your risk is extremely low because you could technically redeem your shares for $10.15 in cash around the merger closing. (However, hopefully the F45 story gets out there and it's no longer trading below the NAV by the merger closing.)
Investor relations said a week or two ago that they're awaiting SEC approval of the proxy statement and then they'll send it out with the shareholder vote date. They said that they now expect closing to be "late Q3 / early Q4".
Note that there is risk with the warrants, in part because if the merger were somehow derailed, they could lose some or all of their value. However, the compensation for that risk right now is that the return potential on them is massive (as outlined above). The main risk for the merger falling through seems to be the possibility that too many shareholders redeem their shares. In that case, Crescent has the option to add more cash to complete the merger. I personally believe that they would do that. They seem to fully believe in F45 as an investment, and they have a vested interest in the merger going through and then the shares doing well. They announced the merger in June, well into Covid, so this wasn't affected by the Covid surprise. F45's franchise sales have been solid despite Covid, as outlined earlier.
I want to reiterate that I have a long position in both CRSA and CRSAW. I hope to realize the maximum profit on the majority of my warrant position by selling or exercising if/when the common shares are trading above $18 (based on the company's ability to redeem the warrants once the shares trade above $18 for 20 days over a 30 day period). Like I mentioned, I'll try to answer any questions to the best of my ability as soon as possible in the comments below. None of this is investment advice, simply an outline of the due diligence that made me highly bullish on F45. Do your own research--there's great further reading in the documents on this page of Crescent's website. In particular, the investor presentation.pdf) I mentioned earlier does an excellent job of laying out the product, business model, financials, etc in an easily digestible way.

The advantages and gains of the internship are put in a short and price way to grasp the attention of readers and evaluators. The final chapter explains about the winding up and suggestion on the project that our company runs. Inside the site we get many things which are appropriate and inappropriate for work in building construction, thus we comment and give our recommendation in some conditions and workings. INTRODUCTION A student enrolls in an internship preparation program at the undergraduate level. The internship is designed to allow the student to gain actual experience in the work Management field under the direct supervision of a job Management professional. The internship is a central part of the student’s preparation and education for entry into work management. The internship experience provides for the opportunity to mix classroom theory with real life situations. The internship allows the students to develop in their chosen profession and to apply classroom theory in various sport settings. The internship experience should provide the student with opportunities to take charge of planning and leading sport management activities with certain groups while taking leadership positions in a variety of settings under the watchful eye of a seasoned work management services professional. CHAPTER: 1 1. INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The internship program is a cooperative effort undertaken by various companies, agencies and the Department of Recreation, and Sport. The sole aim of each of these organizations is to help students establish a sound foundation for their professional career. To achieve this purpose, the agency and the University work together to achieve educational objectives that are explained in this manual. The company should make available its accumulated knowledge and skill to achieve the objectives set forth in this manual. Companies should also provide students, under direct supervision, access to the company’s administrative and service operations for educational purposes. 1.1 INTERNSHIP GENERAL DESCRIPTION The successful completion of an internship will depend greatly upon the student’s ability to realize his/her responsibility. Each student that partakes upon this journey must understand that each agency that accepts them still has their regular duties to perform in conjunction with helping the student. Therefore, the student must adhere to the highest levels of professionalism as no agency can or will tolerate inefficiency, irresponsibility, or other acts by staff or volunteers that would destroy public confidence. When a student accepts an internship with an agency, he/she becomes a part of that agency and as such must adhere to all personnel and agency policies. Each student must remember that his/her actions reflect upon himself/herself, the company, University. 1.2 COMPANY SELECTION CRITERIA The final selection and approval as to the appropriateness of a company will be the decision of the internship coordinator of the management program at company authorities . Students should be aware that they will be included in the decision making process as to where they are to be placed. Any agency wishing to become a site for student placement may discuss the company with the program coordinator. The selection of an company in which to complete a practicum or internship will be based upon the following criteria: a. The internship may be carried out in any recognized or accredited public, voluntary, or private companies. b. The agency reflects a desire to supervise volunteer students through written communication to the University’s Management Coordinator. c. The company exhibits a sound philosophy within its programs and services. d. The company has standing and is recognized as a leader in the sport management field at the local, state, or regional level. e. The company has adequate areas, facilities, and equipment to conduct a broad program that provides for various learning experiences. f. The company utilizes employment standards through a written personnel policy. g. The company employs at least one or more persons with at least a Baccalaureate’s Degree in sport management or related field. Years of service in the profession will substitute for the degree. CHAPTER: 2 INTERNSHIP REMUNERATION POLICY companies may, but are not required to, compensate the student for their services. Students should be aware that many internships are completed as a volunteer. If the company does decide to remunerate the student, it may take the form of liability insurance, meals, parking, transportation, lodging, and wages. It is the student’s responsibility to negotiate all remuneration. 2.1 PURPOSE OF THE INTERNSHIP 2.1.1STUDENT PURPOSE The internship is important to each student and accomplishes the following objectives. We have gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people. We achieved several of our learning goals. We got insight into professional practices currently advocated in the industry. We learned the different facets of working within a well established industry. Related to our study we learned more about the interns at work. Furthermore we have experienced that it is of importance that education is objective and that we have to be aware of the industrial aspect of the topics we study. We collected data on all types of interns at work in various websites, books & internet. So all the work mentioned above involved real time data. The internship program and their activities were given while for others data , they were taken from different websites . This internship programme was not one sided, but it was a way of sharing knowledge, ideas and opinions. The internship was also good to find out what our strengths and weaknesses are. This helped us to define what skills and knowledge we have to improve in the coming time. We can confidently assert that the knowledge we gained through this internship is sufficient to contribute towards our future endeavours. At last this internship has given us new insights and motivation to pursue a career in core departments GLOSSARY D.D Demand Draft TT Telegraphic Transfer A/C Account OB Other Bank OBD Other Bank Draft PLS Profit and Loss Sharing DR Debit CR Credit CA -Current Account FL Flexi Loan LG Letter of Grantee DF -Demand Finance LC -Letter of credit RF -Running Finance FAPC- -Finance against Packing Credit APPENDIX COMPANY DESCRIPTION This section should contain a general description of the agency and should include, the nature of the services provided, its location, information on accreditation, the types of programs the agency offers, the number of departments they may have, the number of staff, and information about your agency supervisor. >**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.** This build is for a home office for my dad who works doing construction project management and is working from home a lot more now and needs a new PC. His needs are to be able to plug 2 monitors in and switch between a lot of open PDF plans, email, excel, MS project and internet browsing. I think having a lot of detailed PDF construction plans open at once is the most demanding task and the current computer definitely can't handle it, especially with all the other programs open. 2020.08.26 05:34 x_repugnant_xCurrently on Optus Cable, I thought I would get HFC in NBN rollover, but checkers now show FTTC. Did something change?
So I'm pretty sure when I've checked the NBN site in the past showing the timeframe for my area, it was going to be HFC, as we are in an area with cable internet. Melbourne West. Now finally the date is approaching I have to switch to NBN, but the NBN checker and provider checkers show it's going to be FTTC.
Have we totally ditched HFC now?
Is the FTTC going to be over my old crappy copper?
If so, is my cable connection to my house, the box on my house and cable connections in my house now just junk?
2020.08.22 06:32 TetragammaTronicaHow They Will Force You to Take Vaccine and The Certificate of Vaccination-ID (C.O.V-ID).
We're being forced to take the next step towards transhumanism, where you will no longer have control and you become a subject, to mandatory inoculations, mandatory detentions, and are a walking human barcode, scannable, your information will be easily attained by the authorities.
“TheTechnotronic Erainvolves the gradual appearance of a more controlled society. Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values. Soon it will be possible to assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen and maintain up-to-date complete files containing even the most personal information about the citizen. These files will be subject to instantaneous retrieval by the authorities.” -Zbigneiw Brzezinski
If they cannot legally force us to take the vaccination, they will start giving ultimatums: "Take the brain-hijacking nano-particle vaccine, take the quantum dot tattoo or go to jail, face a fine, you can't enter restaurants, grocery stores, bars, you can't travel, you cant get a job, it's already happening in Melbourne: Melbourne 2020, No Jab No Job. This is the dilemma we're faced with; inject yourself with nanotechnology vaccines and the tattoo barcode or become an outcast to society. Soon, buildings and all public areas will be affixed with quantum dot tattoo scanning machines (made by Microsoft of course) much like the scene in minority report, and the machine scans you like a piece of produce, for your Certificate of Vaccine ID (C.O.V-ID)! Isn't it strange that COVID means the new identification system? Are things making sense now? You must have a certificate to live. Detention camps are ready if you disobey. EVERY SUBJECT (you) will be forced to take brain-hijacking vaccines and scannable information in or on your body, so you can be "normal" again, when in actuality you are no longer a "normal" human, you become something other than your organic self, your spirit and everything you know. These mandatory vaccines are highly sophisticated bio-technology, nanotechnology that can literally alter your brain, and your DNA for whatever purpose they see fit. Congratulations! You have just have broken free of the cult programming, you now know what despotic technocracy awaits all of us in the near future. The rich will stay rich, while you remain poor, more easily tracked, traced, and manipulated in more ways than one. Big tech companies like Tesla, Microsoft, Intel, Facebook will lead the New World Order, an order where ALL INFORMATION is synced with quantum AI databases, so you are easily tracked in real time and easily identified in real time. A Nanny state worse than China in 2020, imagine our despotic future in 2050 or 2100. In 100 years, the entire population will be controlled by the United Nations, the entity that dissolved all of the world's nation into one. The next step is a National ID card that you will need to access anything, 5G, new artificial intelligence and IoT (Internet of Things) connected with quantum computers will keep everything in sync. One day, scanning devices will be in all public areas and will sync with drone devices like ARGUS, that are capable of recording ANY human on the planet, and the new system will track anyone in real-time. Google will have an AI database that will connect to 24-hour drones like ARGUS and will keep a massive video database of entire cities of people that can go back months, even years.. just type in a person's name or National ID.. you can know exactly where that person has been, with just a quick search... when quantum computing and A.I. go to the next level. (their lenses will be 1000x more powerful, hi-resolution that can spot a fly on a newspaper.) In 10-20 years, whistleblowers will not exist.. they will be tracked and traced by these AI quantum computers and in a snap, thugs will be brought to their door if you try exposing this new despotic order or their pedophile rings, especially. COVID-19 was the roll out, things are getting too hot for them, whistleblowers coming out of the wood-work to expose the New World Order plans, a despotic future that will become far too big, and far too powerful to stop soon. Always do this. Never stop.
2020.07.08 13:02 SnofferMCBonalskFrom Major Label to Independent - Promotion Tips, Spotify Algoritm, Ads & Playlists (LOONG)
Hey! My name is Joe I've been lurking around this subreddit for a long time, gaining lots of experience and tips from all of you including songwriting, producing, mixing and promotion. I want to tell everyone that is contributing to this subreddit to keep up the good work, there is few places on the internet where you find such genuine and nice people talking about music. About Me I'm 27 and been working with music for the past 10 years, I've racked up around 150 million streams world wide over the common platforms and had some tracks on the top 50 Charts in a few countries. I wrote my first post here about 2 months ago talking about my experience and ways of how I've made my music heard around the world. I got so many good questions and they still popping up in my DM now and then and im just glad i can help out! I wanted to share what I've been through during my 10 years in the industry, Starting as a bedroom producer, to getting signed to a major label, into going back to now going independent and promoting and managing my own projects again, How this has impacted me, what I've learned along the way and what i can recommend to do or not. Im gonna try to keep this relatively short and focus on the things that can actually help you in your own work and projects, but without making it too plain.
Music background in music
So I started making music when i was 17 (27 today), Had pretty much no idea what i was doing songwriting wise, but my mother made me play piano in 8 years up to that point so i had some knowledge in how chords and notes worked. It took me 4 years until i got to release my first single, the song was a melbourne bounce track that me and 2 friends completed in about 5 hours and we pretty much shoved it out on Spotify and wrote to all our friends on Facebook to share it. It gained some interest and streams and had around 100k streams after a month. At the time we where pretty hyped over the results and we started to get some interest from labels via email, really small ones. We booked a meeting with one of them, and on the way over we agreed that we should reach out to the big ones too, got nothing to lose right? Stalked up a Phone number to an A&R of a major label and called him from the car and said that we had a track we wanted him to hear. His Response was something like : "No it dont work that way, that need to be planned in weeks in advance". We told him that we wanted to mail it over anyway and asked for his email adress that he gave out, probably to get rid of us, and hung up the call. 10 minutes later we got a callback from him saying that he wanted to have a meeting and discuss a deal (Guess he liked the track). We planned it in after the first meeting with the small label and went on ahead. The first meeting Isnt anything special, the guy pretty much tells us that he could work with us and maybe get us signed to another label later. Didnt feel the vibe here but told him that we should get back to him after the other meeting we had planned. At The Major Labels it was pretty badass, big offices, looked professional, went in to a room and the A&R was very professional and friendly, we decided to pretty much agree on the terms he laid up on the table, unexperienced as we where, (License deal, 70 % For the label, 30% for us) and went home. He actually did alot of work on the track, put it in some huge playlists and the track got way more attention than before (Currently around 10 million streams). After this we Released a collab with a major artist which came to be my biggest release till today (Around 65 million streams, top 50 in 3 countries). This release was pretty much how people think a major label works since the other artist was so established. A whole team of people working it, Analytics, graphic designers, and a huge budget. After this it all went south, for every release we did, The Label was less and less interested in working with it. We also got our A&R Changed since the previous one quit working for there and the new one wasnt nearly as interested in working the project. We also got a new contract for the project with reasoning from them that they wont be able to make a profit if they dont lower our %, which turned into an 80/20 contract for us if we wanted to stay with them. Our latest releases is laying on around 1 million streams in average which isnt nearly enough to make the money required, and here is why: 1 million streams = ~$5000 (Counted high) 20% of $5000 = $1000 We are 3 in that group, which means that generates ~$333 Each for every release. Also, what many dont know, is that any expense that a label puts out on your project is recoupable, which means that if they spend $1000 On ads for a single, you wont get paid from the track until your share has generated those $1000. After that you get paid. This pretty much means that any promotion they do, that cost money, will be taken from your pocket. So You're Paying a company a huge amount of your % to work your project, but you are also paying for the money they put in. This becomes a bad circle where you get paid very little for the time you put in unless the label really prioritize you, which you have no control over. Ofcourse they have huge channels that will give you exposure that dont cost money, such as playlists & social media, but yet , i needed 5x the streams than if i wasnt signed to make the same.
Going Independent again
This is when i started to calculate things and thinking about if i really need the label to do those things for me, what if i learned to run the ads myself? Started pitching playlists myself? And started building my own brand where i can effectively chose the most profitable ways of promoting. I got together with 2 other musicians i know, one songwritevocalist and one sound engeneeproducer where i put out the idea of going independent which they liked. I was studying marketing and music promotion in every way possible around the web for 6 months to really get the hang of how to get the right exposure for our music longterm by ourselves and then we put out our first release.
Some good to know's
So, Spotify favours tracks that generates good data, its not all about streaming numbers. I think the focus should be changed from looking at the amount of streams to things as Save rate, User Playlist adds, Skip rate, Following and Listeners. They also want users to stay on the platform as long as possible, so get your Artist page professional! Add a biography, update your photos, Use the artist pick with a playlist or your latest release. It all matters. What you want to achive for the algoritm to favour you A good save rate (I Read somewhere that a good goal is 10% of the streams, guess its just an opinion though) User Playlist adds Conversion Rate (How many of your listeners starts to follow you) Listener vs Streams (If you have as many listeners as streams, that means noone repeats your song which is not favourable. Spotify wants people to repeat the song to show that they like it.) Spotify Followers (Every follower gets your new releases in their release radar. 500 followers = 500 release radar ads, free exposure) What you want to avoid High Skiprate (If people skips your song that means they dont like it. This rate can be reduced by removing long intros or outros and to focus on keeping a good energy through the track. Even if its a ballad or a dance track. You also only get paid if the user streams it for atleast 30 seconds) Low Save Rate (Example: If you only go for playlist pitching, your save rate is gonna drop dramaticly. Thats because of how a listener consumes music in a playlist. Maybe they're out running and they put a playlist on with running music, very few will stop what they are doing to check what song is playing to add it to their playlist or follow the artist) People deleting you from their Playlist (Hard to control, just stay professional so that people dont start to dislike you on social media and stuff) There is some more info in my previous post about this, you can check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/WeAreTheMusicMakers/comments/g74ykmusic_promotion_how_to_get_your_music_heard_loong/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x
My methods of Promotion
Presave So firstly I Ran a pre-save campaign, for those who dont know, a pre-save gives a user the opportunity to save the track in advance, when the song releases everyone who has pre-saved will: Follow the artist & like the Song. This gives a way to start promoting the song and getting good engagement for the track even before the song is released. When it comes to how to get people to pre-save it all about being creative. Ofcourse i wrote to all of my friends and family to click the link and to share the link on their social media. I also contacted a few influencers and chose to go through with the ones where i believed would reach the biggest audience for the smallest cost. I spent about $50 on the pre-save campaign and had about 300 Pre-saves on the track Ads: I ran ads through Snapchat & Instagram Story, the Snapchat ads has performed best so far. The ad is a video with a short clip from the most interesting part of the song with some text about that the music is out. I target my ads to people who like artists in the same genre or music festivals that play that kind of music. What i have been doing differently than before is that the location the ad link sends you is to my Spotify PROFILE, not to the Spotify track. There is 2 reasons for this: When someone clicks your link and gets sent directly to the track, they might play it for 15 seconds then leave and go back to what they where doing. They might have clicked the link by accident or just had a mild interest in what they saw. What this does it that it increases your Skiprate. You might get more streams by sending people to your track, but the quality is lower. The second reason i send users to the artist page is because of the following. The follow button only shows when you browse an artist page, not when you browse a track. So when you click the link and get directly to the artist page you get presented the follow button and the user get the whole picture of the artist. They need to make a commitment to press play on your music and if that commitment exists, there is a much higher chance they will listen to the whole track and save the track. Other Streaming Platforms: So, my focus is towards Spotify, but we want high quality listeners on Spotify. Thats why i have been putting in a good amount of work to get the track heard on other platforms, such as Soundcloud & Youtube. If someone hears your track on SC or YT and they really like it, there is a good chance that they want to add it on their Spotify too. They will look for links in the descriptions where it is openly presented and after that get to the Spotify Profile. Noone that dosnt like the song will look for those links, which means that almost every user that comes from other platforms probably likes the track and wants to save it. In this project we release our music Copyright free. So i emailed around 100 Youtube Channels that upload copyright free music and asked if they wanted to upload the track. I got answers from around 20 of them that went ahead and uploaded. This spread across Youtube and last time i checked there was around 3000 videos that used the track in their own uploads as background music/streaming music/intros etc. The same goes here, if one of their viewers hears the track and like it, they look it up on Spotify which becomes a quality listener. Playlist Pitching Even though i wrote earlier that playlists can hurt your save rate, its not a bad thing. You shoulnt just Only Focus on playlists. I created my own spreadsheet of playlist currators before we released our first track that had about 400 contacts and sent out a pitch to them. Got loads of answers, many that asked for payment to place the song which i ignored and removed from my list, but there was also some that either added the track or said that the song dont fit them but to come back with more material. Those are the valuable ones, ofcourse i answered all of them with a thank you, tagged their social media and posted about their playlist on Instagram/facebook to show my help in return because i want to keep a good relationship and be able to send more tracks to them. I also tried out submithub, i spend about $80 on it, i didnt get a single approval so i wont do that again. I submitted to websites that provies playlist submissions through the web. Heres a list: IndieMono Soundplate WorkHardPlaylistHard ArtistintelligenceAgency DailyPlaylist LoveofBands Simon Field MySphera Kolibri Music Tunemunk Alexrainbirdmusic I got added to 5 playlists from those. Social Media We keep our Social Medias up to date, we dont only post promotional posts about our music and releases. Here is where we give the followers the value that they want, we include working progress, pictures of ourselves, stories of our vocalists singing etc. We also work hard to have a good relationship with our followers and other users, we answer to comments, writes on other peoples music posts/videos and just show ourselves as much as possible. The social Medias are just as important as Spotify, because its another way to get yourself seen and heard.
We released our first single in May that has gained about 119k streams, a remix of that that is around 20k streams. The remix has been picked up by discover weekly and the number from it is growing slowly (Started from 40/day and is now on around 75/day) We've gathered around 900 followers on Spotify and around 600 on Instagram, gotten 6 offers from labels and a few collab requests from other artists that want do work together. The result is in my opinion good. Even though I've put in extremely many work hours, learning and executing all the things that I've felt was necessary the process has been really fun. If you're like me and get a kick out of seeing numbers and graphs grow, it's way more interesting to do the work yourself than let a label do most of it. I do have a positive view on the project since i believe it will grow exponentially, we got 4 more tracks ready for release with the first one coming out now on July 17 and plan to release them with around 45 days between each other to keep the momentum going and hopefully get good enough engagement to be picked up by discover weekly and maybe Spotify Editorial Playlists sometime. Only time will tell! I hope this can help someone with their own music or choices in the industry and if there is any questions I'll try to answer them as good as i can Much Love to everyone here in WATMM!
2020.07.04 10:49 Sad-Acanthisitta952Continuation of the trip of the girl on a motorcycle in South America “They robbed four times, and once I faced armed robbery”
Full story here, biker girl site here - A year ago, the circumnavigation of the world almost had to be interrupted due to the theft of documents. Was that story continued? And have you changed your strategy after the incident in Mexico? - Having pulled myself together, I realized that nothing could be decided by the nurses, and began to act actively. I was in touch with the embassy, exploring options for obtaining a return certificate. In parallel with a local motorcyclist, she turned to the police, filed a theft statement, posted an ad on social networks and on the radio, distributed paper pieces with a promise of reward for any information. They sat in ambush until the morning, talking with drug addicts, alcoholics and regulars at nearby establishments and the beach. Three days later, the owner of the cafe where I was having dinner got in touch, confusedly explaining that a thief had come to him and wanted $ 600 for my documents. They bargained up to $ 200, and the next day I had my battered Belarusian passport again. After that, I became much less likely to stay in wild places, trying to choose organized campsites or hostels. And I began to believe in miracles! - You were robbed four times, the motorcycle was damaged several times, and once you had to face an armed robbery. You did not have time to disappoint in people? Many rascals met along the way? - Absolutely not disappointed. According to my feelings, there are less than one percent of villains all over the world, and troubles often lead to meetings with completely amazing people and luck in a completely different sphere. Moreover, robberies and thefts are a rarity in our region, we are horrified and do not understand, and in Latin America this is unpleasant, but commonplace. There will always be those who work to support themselves and their families, and those who find it easier to take from another. It's just that the scales are different ... - Blitz. Which country seemed the most dangerous, and which one the most comfortable? Where else would you return, and what do you want to forget as a nightmare? “Traveling taught me to avoid extremes in judgment.” In any situation, country, person, there are always several sides, and you can not hang up labels and clearly scold or praise. In general, Japan, Australia, Europe and the United States are much calmer and safer than in Mexico, Central and South America. But no one is safe from troubles in the most statistically safe city, and there is no need to constantly live in fear, traveling to countries with an ambiguous reputation. I want to return to Australia (I have not yet been to its western part), Mexico (to celebrate the Day of the Dead) and Argentina (to once again be inspired by glaciers, mountains and wildlife, almost untouched by humans). “Quarantine and confined space have become a test” - Two years ago, when you announced your intention to make a trip around the world, the mood was over-optimistic and fighting. Has something changed since then? - I became more calm, tolerant of negativity and began to better understand myself and the world around me. When you study the cultures of different nations, your own horizons become richer and more extensive. It is much easier to cope with any life difficulties. I believe that there are no hopeless situations. It just takes more time or resources to find solutions. One of the features of post-Soviet culture is the rigor in interpreting the behavior or appearance of other people. We are used to denouncing things that we don’t understand, without thinking about what we can hurt someone. I got rid of this habit, and in my soul it became cleaner and more pleasant. - And what happened at the end of March? Facebook had two very sad posts in a row, which is unusual for peppy reports from across the ocean. “The quarantine and the enclosed space have become a test for me and hundreds of other adventure and freedom lovers. When you constantly move forward, and you are locked up, fettering all nature, it’s hard to adapt to this. I understand the seriousness of the pandemic in the world and the need for action, but I was not able to maintain a cloudless, optimistic mood. Now in Minsk it is much easier for me to breathe, you can relax a bit and recover. “And then they asked me: did you not know that this was the boss of the local drug cartel?” - Often you write in social networks that you are lucky and that someone is watching over you. What is it about? - I joke that I have a special talent - to get into trouble, and then easily and naturally get out of them. If we consider every visually dangerous / complex / unpleasant incident that happened to me, then after it always follows a series of events, as a result of which everything is resolved in the best way. For example, a fall in the mountains in Mexico. I was traveling from one small town to another through a beautiful canyon. Dirt-sand road, with stones, temperature +43 degrees Celsius. Having traveled half the way, I was tired and made a mistake on the rise - I hooked a cobblestone on the bottom. The loaded motorcycle plopped down my leg, simultaneously tucking the second. On adrenaline, I pulled it out from under the coffer, ripping off my skin, and I couldn’t stand up on my own anymore. Dizzy, and pain shock prevented control of the body. I crawled under a tree and began to wait for a random car. I have a satellite device with insurance included, when I press the SOS button, a rescue helicopter should fly in, but the situation was not so critical. After 40 minutes, a car appeared heading for the city. People from her promised to send help. Soon I heard the roar of an ATV - two men were heading towards me. One of them was in a T-shirt with the inscription “Police”, and the second was a healthy man two meters tall, with a gold chain around his neck. He easily picked up my motorcycle and rode it back to the city, and the policeman loaded me on the ATV and rode after him. Six armed men were waiting for us in the city, who escorted me to the hospital, then took me to a hotel and showed me in which cafe daily meals would be organized for me. https://preview.redd.it/6k0l53duys851.jpg?width=1100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3783fb3ce8e0596aed8a331523a808c369da3230 https://preview.redd.it/zpofb07wys851.jpg?width=1100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2aa0a71701ce89a0dfe1db4db7e4656da246f3a0 They treated me like a princess! And soon it became clear why. The hotel owner casually inquired: “Don't you know what kind of people these are?” “No, but what?” “The man in orange is the boss of the local drug cartel, and the rest are his assistants. They decided that you are not a gringo and that you can be helped. ” When I was able to walk and drive a motorcycle on my own, they helped me bring my luggage to the normal road, fed me last, and wished me luck. There have been many such cases, so yes, I believe that I have a guardian angel who protects and looks after me, giving me the opportunity to taste the bitter taste of failure and giving me a delicious dessert afterwards. “Should every woman have a little red dress?” Is this a fetish? Why so many photos with him? - My red dress is not at all small (there should be a smiley face). Purchased for $ 5 at a second-hand in New York. Yes, it has become the most popular accessory in the pictures. I have four more dresses, but everyone especially likes the red one. It's easy to lose femininity on the road. You drive a motorcycle, get covered with road dust, climb mountains, carry heavy luggage, sleep in a tent. With all this, it is difficult to maintain good appearance and hygiene. But I'm trying. I like to be a girl - despite the circumstances, put my hair in order, do not forget about manicures and pedicures. Because of this, dresses appeared in the wardrobe - motorcycle equipment gives a sense of security, but does not help in maintaining beauty. https://preview.redd.it/if1zco24zs851.jpg?width=1400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef3f710519a1aead07845a437426070fd8a73979 https://preview.redd.it/ukfqekf8zs851.jpg?width=1100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cc7f513decc2f86cfdd2fe25f9816fcbec60ef4 ![img](wlrchheazs851 " “The odometer on a motorcycle is reset to zero twice” - How is Henry doing (as a motorcyclist calls her BMW F650GS. - Approx. Onliner)? As I understand it, the odometer has already counted two hundred thousandth mark? ") - “Henry” is doing great. I bought it with a range of 33 thousand km. To date, the odometer has already “zeroed” two times and now shows 7 thousand km. As they say, grandmother went to the store for bread ... - A lot of posts on your Instagram are about breakdowns. Is it bored? - It seems like a lot. If you recall all the breakdowns in two years, then taking into account the almost daily operation, the motorcycle worked perfectly. And what is very important, it is not crammed with electronics, like most completely new bikes, so it is easy to fix it. No problem finding parts. ![img](useefq8fzs851 " In Patagonia (Argentina) I saw a lot of motorcycles in 2017-2019 on services that you can’t do anything with, because the level of skill of the mechanics does not allow them to be repaired, and parts can go from Europe or Japan up to three to five months. ") - How did you service the motorcycle and solve problems with technical malfunctions? - My ex-husband is an excellent mechanic, and he advised me on all issues that arose. I fixed minor breakdowns on my own, and for major ones I turned to BMW branded centers or to mechanics according to the recommendations of local motorcyclists. Sometimes I agreed that I would do everything myself, but under the supervision of a specialist. As it was, for example, in Denver. There I met Woody Witte, America’s finest spokesman on wheels. Woody is a legend: he is 78 years old and has made thousands of wheels for travelers from around the world, athletes and just motorcyclists. Another area that Woody leads is the manufacture of mechanisms that allow people with disabilities to ski, surf and any other activity. It all started with a passion for motor boats, although Woody's parents wanted to see him as a lawyer or a doctor. You can make a movie about the history of his life. Born into the family of a German engineer in Munich in 1942. During the war, his father was sent to Poland. In January 1945, Woody's mother took him and his sister and managed to catch the last train going to Germany. The route, which usually took eight hours, stretched for eight weeks - the railway was partially destroyed. With her, the woman managed to take only documents and several silver knives and forks. https://preview.redd.it/ei05f7hizs851.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0fb291e42210222b20322952df3e41444e4977d We got there successfully and almost missed each other with my father, who went to the station. He wanted to catch the very train on which they arrived. Woody's mother is a believer and was very upset that she could not find her favorite Bible. But miracles happen in our world. A few years later, the family moved to America, and in 1950 a parcel arrived from Woody's grandmother from Germany. It contained an old family Bible and a story about how, five years after the war, a Soviet officer knocked on the door and brought the very book with the address of the Woody family on one of the pages. When he told me this story, his eyes sparkled with tears. In the end, Woody said that this way one person can change his attitude to an entire nation, and he gratefully recalls this noble military man. But I was distracted. Let's get back to motorcycle repair. Initially, I planned to check only the front wheel. However, Woody advised to align the back as well. Seeing my wrinkled nose, he looked at me and said, they say, if the issue is cost, then I can do half the work myself under his supervision. For the first time in her life, she removed and put back both wheels, flanged tires and learned all the secrets from maestro Woody. After adjusting the knitting needles and all the magic manipulations, my “Henry” rode as well as ever before. I have a very measured pace of movement, since I am almost not attached to dates. Only the first section in Russia was tense, when at the customs in Moscow for five days the equipment was delayed and the road had to be driven in order to catch a ferry from Vladivostok. Then I spent four days in a row driving more than 17 hours a day and drove 1,000 kilometers a day. In this mode, of course, we are not talking about pleasure, but in the future everything was rich and interesting. At any moment I can stop and not go anywhere, planning and changing the route, turning onto small paths or spending the night on the shore of a lake not indicated on the map. - Which stretch of the road was the most stressful? - There were difficult days and difficult routes. In Australia, these are sandy “washing boards” and fords after heavy rains, in Costa Rica and Nicaragua there are mountain roads to volcanoes, in Mexico there is an abundance of “sleeping policemen” of all shapes and sizes, in Argentina there are narrow rocky paths and a strong wind. - We have wonderful roads! Just like the driving culture. Of course, compared with Japan or Australia, we are not so attentive, polite and accurate in relation to each other and the rules of the road, but if we take Latin America or Central Asia, we are very lucky with the quality of the roads and with the neighbors on the roadway. “I don’t go to wild places, so at least once in a couple of days I’m looking for a gas station for truckers, a hostel or equipped camping. Always with you a tent, a gas burner and everything you need for an overnight stay in a camp in any weather. I mainly use the iOverlander application, which works worldwide. Sometimes I ask local residents for advice or just look for a forest clearing away from people. https://preview.redd.it/4v706ay30t851.jpg?width=1100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b93c8c098cf17d762e8075332ccd2b62f0363ed “I don’t have regular sponsors, papa oligarch or secret inheritance” - In addition to building skills and practical details related to servicing a motorcycle, I gained the ability to invent dishes from what is available and repair anything using improvised means. The ingenuity allows you to search for non-standard solutions in almost any situation, and having an adhesive tape, a rope, a pair of clamps and a WD-40, you become almost invulnerable. Hiking fell in love with all my heart. One of the most vivid impressions was the climb to the Akatenango volcano in Guatemala. Next to it is the fire-breathing Fuego, which refers to unpredictable volcanoes. In normal mode, he puffs and spits out a little lava and hot steam every 5-7 minutes, and in 2018 he began to actively erupt. Then 159 people died. Akatenango is his sleeping and absolutely harmless fellow, from whom I was lucky to watch a unique phenomenon all night: a powerful thunderstorm cut the sky with flashes, and several times lightning struck directly into the mouth of a fiery volcano. Very often people in all countries of the world invited me to visit, offered overnight, treated them with delicious home-made food. This hospitality is breathtaking and tears come to my eyes. With many you part already friends forever. https://preview.redd.it/cvxte2i80t851.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=804cfa9152e327d28e7e046842d3fb4f5aeda9dc I don’t conduct bookkeeping, but I’ll tell you about the main sources of finance and the search for funds to continue the journey. Firstly, own savings. Before the start of the world tour, I worked as a leading marketer in the field of agricultural machinery at Belagro. All earned invested in training or put off. Visas to Australia, the USA and Japan were paid, seven vaccinations were made, Carnet de passage en doune was issued, Vladivostok - Tokyo and Tokyo - Melbourne tickets were bought, new tires were bought and sent to Vladivostok, and many useful little things were purchased. It was possible to accumulate about 3000 at. e. in equivalent. Secondly, work. I used every opportunity. For obvious reasons, I will not name the countries, but I will tell you about professions and income level. In countries with a high standard of living, earnings reached $ 100-150 per day. I worked for a total of six months from the entire trip. Professions: online translator for English speaking friends; designer; painter (smart work: dusty, labor-consuming, excellent team, invaluable experience); handyman on a swimming pool construction + gardening and cleaning (heavy physical labor, good pay, interesting employer); cleaning lady (the most exhausting, nervous, sometimes absolutely thankless job, six days a week from morning to night, but with decent pay). Where to look for a job? Everywhere. Communities of Russian immigrants in social networks, ads on the streets, polls all around. If you really want and are ready to work hard, and not to beg, then you will succeed. If you can work remotely, agree. You can also work for free in exchange for food and shelter. https://preview.redd.it/qw6nv21b0t851.jpg?width=1100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb9414b8a22dabebc359f83f9f6884e41b7cff35 Thirdly, sponsorship. I sent out over a hundred letters. Alas, the majority does not know such a country as Belarus, and does not consider our market interesting for moving through the ambassador. But thirteen companies believed in me by offering a product partnership (provision of spare parts, equipment, equipment), and two companies - one-time financial support. All these fifteen organizations took part in the branding of motorcycle equipment. Fourth, the donation system. I myself supported many travelers before the start of the round-the-world trip, and that's why I decided to make such a page on the site. In each country I carry out the action "Live card in exchange for absolutely any size donation." I believe that this is a mutually beneficial exchange, I am incredibly grateful to all my friends, family and many who are not familiar with yet for helping us and Henry to move forward. "I have been bitten by mosquitoes since Japan" Many states allow entry if you have a “prestigious” US, Canadian or Schengen visa. Legislation on visa issues in each country is constantly changing, and ideally you need to have a list of documents that will be needed in advance. It is better to bring copies of all-all documents in different languages and photographs with you so as not to run around looking for a photo kiosk. You should also connect online banking with the ability to receive an extract from cards, preferably in English, and store the “fireproof” amount there for demonstration in embassies and in case of emergency. You can always change directions to visa-free countries or ask for help from our embassies abroad, they will help to understand the features of obtaining visas. No one further than the CIS knows what the Belarusian driver’s license should look like, so they usually twist it in their hands for a long time, examine it and return it. I'm a little tricky with the police, but you need to understand where this can be done, and where such behavior is fraught with problems. In Latin America, when the police stopped me, I negatively turned my head to the question of whether I know Spanish or English, and began to quickly chatter in Russian, blurry with a wide smile (no aggression or rudeness). Most often, the policeman is tired of listening to this - he does not know what to do with me, and in the end he waves his hand and lets go. - But no one found fault with the plastic number (in Argentina, the original Henry number was lost. - Note Onliner)? - The same situation as with the certificate. Few even know our country, not to mention how our license plates should look. There were no problems, just smiles and wishes for a good journey. And then a coronavirus happened to the planet. Very upset that had to be interrupted? And why didn’t you want to wait for the end of quarantine in Argentina? - Of course I was upset! I had only a small segment in Morocco and Europe, and in May I wanted to enter Minsk on a motorcycle, and I had to sit locked up for 77 days, leave the motorcycle and fly home. To date, Argentina is one of the countries with the longest quarantine in the world. On the day before departure, their president again extended the isolation regime. It was officially announced that there would be no transport links until September, and sitting there is not so cheap: you have to rent a house, pay for the Internet, buy food, and most importantly - this is really strict quarantine. With fines of up to € 1,500, real prison sentences for violations and the inability to go beyond the nearest store or pharmacy. Therefore, I decided that at home I would be more comfortable taking into account the general uncertainty in the development of the situation. I filed a notarized power of attorney for my friend in Argentina so that he could send Henry to any country without my presence, and I plan to reunite with the motorcycle in the fall. “I'll try to collect notes in a book” “What did you miss most?” Through the air, pine forest, people, mineral water? - By parents, relatives and friends, of course. Although nature pleased. At the very first gas station (Katya was returning from Moscow to Minsk by minibus. - Note Onliner), when the smell of a pine forest hit my nose, I ran to the edge of the asphalt, touched the wet leaves of a dandelion, caught a frog, stroked a pine bark. Belarus met me with a blue sky, bright sun and warmth. Now I am getting used to changing time zones and enjoy the comfort of my home. ![img](g2o2d0ue0t851 " - But still, for the sake of what did you start all this and did you achieve what you wanted? No disappointment? ") - My trip had a lot of prerequisites, questions and goals. Exploring the world, exploring other cultures, searching for yourself, a note of feminism, a desire to share knowledge about our country, testing physical abilities, achieving harmony, gaining new skills, understanding others, unlocking potential and much, much more. I am happy that I decided and went all the way to the end. - What now? Will you write a book? Make a movie? Talk about exotic countries in schools? Do you plan to stay in Belarus? - I have time until the fall to think about the future and make a decision, because there is still so much unknown in the world ... Or maybe I will return to Minsk on a motorcycle and begin to get used to a sedentary lifestyle. In the meantime, I will try to collect all my notes in a book, because I have something to share with readers. I also plan to organize a meeting where I will tell you as much as possible about adventures and answer all questions. Photo: Ekaterina Dubanevich, Vlad Borisevich
2020.06.09 10:39 ZaaaWarudoI want to commit suicide tonight, but i'm so scared. This is my goodbye letter
This is my goodbye letter. I too ashamed to write such a hideous letter to my family or friends, but i so desperately want someone to hear this so i'm writing strangers of the internet. I'm going to write about every small detail that led me to this moment. I know this post is really long winded with a few tangents but please read through. I'm in year 12 my final year of school and it's been the worst year of my life. My depression and anxiety started last year in year 11. I was hit a foot ball during a lunch time and ended up with a concussion. I took two weeks off of school, this would ultimately be the start of my downfall spiralling downhill. Because of this i started to fall behind with exams just around the corner. Everyone else was already studying for exams but i was still busy studying for late tests and doing assignments that i missed. In the end my only options was to wing the exams but in another stroke of bad luck I caught the flu on the day of exams. I was unbelievable tired, my eyes were going dim. I tried going up to first aid to get my get some paracetamol to help but they said they were not allowed to give out medication. So I went out when it was freezing to the local pharmacy in order to get some medication. This made my condition far worse. I ended up falling asleep in the chemistry written exam at the start of the day and the practical exam at the end of the day. Needless to say i failed exams. After this is when my depression started. I could never fall asleep because I would always stay awake thinking about school. You know that feeling when you're just awake at night and suddenly you remember an embarrassing memory and start cringing? That was me on a more severe level thinking about school. Before the exams I'd most of the time gotten the highest marks in the class but suddenly began to doubt myself. I slowly began to skip classes and every class i skipped would make it harder to go back. I was always a goody two shoes so I was afraid of coming back to class and the teacher calling me out in front of everyone for my unexplained absences (they had a tendency to do this). Each time i tried going back to class i started hyperventilating before i got to the door and never ended up entering. I went to see a GP to try and get help but it felt like he didn't care. His response to me was "why do you have depression? Why do you have anxiety about class? If you think people are judging you just ignore them. Just ignore the exam result and you will be fine." I don't think he understood that my anxiety and depression was due to the fact that i couldn't ignore my exam result, that i couldn't ignore what other people thought about me. But i still ended up seeing him every week because he was the only GP close by and he eventually prescribed medication. The only catch was he said that he would not give me medication unless I brought a parent to an appointment. I told my parents about my depression, they didn't believe me but still when to the appointment. After the appointment i got my prescription and thought i could get my medication and continue on happily with my life, that was not the case. My parents at this point believed i had depression but didn't think it was severe enough to warrant medication since you have to take the medication for a long time. They convinced me to not take the medication, i have not talked to the GP since. Instead i started talking to my school counsellor. I'm going to be honest i didn't find much help with the sessions with her. Most of the tips i ended up leaving with were exercise in the morning, belly breathing and meditation. I eventually stopped seeing her too. My last resort was going to an organisation called head space. They provide free psychologist and psychiatrist help however there is a long wait list. By the time i was able to get in touch with a psychologist the school year was coming to an end with end of year exams. I talked to the psychologist and a bit reassured going into exams but when time came, i messed up. Even though i skipped classes i would still study by myself so I thought i was prepared. But during exams my mind went blank i started having panic attacks and hyperventilating. I told my teachers what was going on and provided my medical certificates so they let me do it another date in a private room. This didn't help, my hand were shaking every single exam, i just wanted to give up. I did well on other tests and assignments but had another disappoint result on my exams worth 50% of my final grade. Through this ordeal I had one shinning light, my English teacher, Mr Hubber. He modified the exam for me and would guide me through it. I panicked and threw up during the exam but he didn't force me to do it anymore. He said he could estimate my exam result using my assignments and tests. We talked for a long time and i started having hope again. He was the best teacher i ever had and English was the only subject i did well on in the end. Even though I didn't do well on other subjects because of the exam, doing well in English gave me hope to do better. So began my year 12. My English teacher sadly had to move to Melbourne this year but he said he talked to my new English teachers and made sure they would be understanding of me. I'm not sure how the school screwed this one up so badly, but for my final and most important year of school i got two English teachers sharing a class, both new to the school. One would teach on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays on odd weeks, the other Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on even weeks. It was horrible. They both didn't know what they were doing as they were knew to the school and every time there was a question they would say "i'll write that down and ask the English coordinator later". Then the Covid-19 crisis came. We all moved to online classes. For and introvert with anxiety online classes seemed to come in handy. We did all of our tests online and submitted our assignments online. I started feeling a bit better about my self until one day my dad got an email from my English teachers. The email said that it had been a month already and I hadn't submitted my assignment yet. I already completed it and submitted it so I didn't know what the English teachers were talking about. I ended up apologising to my dad and resubmitted it. The problem is that you lose 5% each day with an overdue assignment so i'm wondering why they told me a month later instead of the day after it was due. I still remained positive thinking it was only one assignment, it's not my fault, i completed it on time. Another month later my dad got another email saying that very same assignment still hasn't been submitted. My dad emailed back and forth several times with overwhelming evidence that i had completed my assignment on time. With At least 20 emails back and forth with my dad, my English teachers didn't even directly email me once. My dad told them to talk to me directly instead of through him but they didn't listen. Apparently they didn't trust me but for some reason trusted my dad. I began skipping English class because i hated seeing their faces. My anxiety started to build up again and this mindset spread to my other classes. It may seem over nothing but my mind was so fragile at the time and still is. Anything negative would just tip me over. after a while face to face classes began again but there were still optional online classes, i chose online. But i was the only one doing online in all of my classes. The entire class was there and I was the only one displayed in the meeting in front of class. I would get called out by my classmates for not going to school and made fun of. The teachers would pick on me to answer questions to make sure i was participating at home. I hated online class so much but i was also too afraid to come back after all this time. So I just stopped going to class altogether. The teachers would post the recorded lessons on Microsoft streams and i would just watch those instead. I still learnt all the things necessary just like my classmates the only difference was i didn't attend class live. Today my coordinator at school called my dad told him that I've missed too many classes and voided all my subjects. I tried to explain but the words couldn't come out. My dad was furious at me. He shouted "WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO FOR YOU TO LEARN PROPERLY?" I couldn't answer. All my work has been for nothing. I've just failed school. I knew not attending class was wrong, but I still tried, I still went over all the work and now its all gone down the drain. I have to go in tomorrow to talk to my teachers which I hate. I'm beyond tired especially knowing my work has been for nothing. i just want to give up now. At night when my family is asleep i'm going to sneak out and end it all. I don't want my parents to go through the pain of finding me in my room. I want the police or someone else to find me. I have lived an unfulfilling life I hope the world can forgive me.
2020.05.29 08:36 NeatSaucer[MELBOURNE - 29th - Post 6 ] NeatSaucer is seen conducting a YouTube Live Stream answering the Questions Melbourne has with respect to voting Social Democrats.
The Candidate from the Social Democratic Party, NeatSaucer, the unknown and yet known face across the Parliament for his charismatic statements from the Public Gallery, is seen trying to connect his YouTube Live Stream from his car, parked on Alfred Crescent, Fitzroy. Hello one and all! I am NeatSaucer aka Pav. Welcome to you all, thank you for taking time and patiently waiting for me, a techno-learner in spite of being a young teen, how bad am I, moving forward, I am taking this entire livestream, to try and convince you in an attempt to encourage you all to vote for me and the Social Democrats this by-election in Melbourne. Pav gets out of the car, and starts to jog, crossing the road, and enters Edinburgh Gardens. It's hard in these times isn't it? COVID-19 has thrown so many people's lives out of balance. We need an MP here that can stand up, and ensure that we are protected during this crisis. The SDP have received criticism for lacking to stand up for worker's rights, but I reject that notion. If you see the bills the SDP have introduced to parliament, you will see who the party standing up for the working class is. It isn't the LNP, that's for sure, and the ADP haven't done anything this term except make statements. If you want a voice in parliament who will stand up for the working class, vote SDP. Pav heads through the park, admiring the beautiful environment, with trees everywhere. A message suddenly pops up. G’Day, I’m Joseph. What will this party do to ensure that the environment and this planet is protected. If you see the parties contesting, you would easily find out that it is only the SDP that is a party for the environment and climate action. During our previous stint in Government, we remained committed to our Paris Agreement Obligations and refused to allow the construction of any polluting plants, and also invest in eco-friendly alternatives. This term, we have promised to create and deliver a National Environment Commission which will be an independent voice scrutinising the Government and their policy plans on Climate Action, which is virtually none in LNP. We have also promised to ensure that we become 100% renewable by the time we reach 2035 and urge the Government to refuse all new coal, oil and gas projects, which they won’t because they hate Climate Action, but we will certainly be strong on that. So Joseph, I hope you got a good idea of our environment related plans. Pav continues to jog, and witnesses few children exercising with their parents at social distancing, when he feels slightly tired, he takes a break to only find another text message. Hello Pav, Austin here! May I ask you as an Indigenous Australian, as Wurundjeri Women, what will the SDP do, to ensure that the path towards reconciliation is protected? How do you differ from other parties in this regard? An honest question, I get your concern, Austin, after all we now have a Government run by those who do not give a damn about us, Indigenous Australians. But, you have an option, my friend. By voting Social Democrat, you are voting for a Party which cares for you and the Indigenous communities. We have always delivered for the community and will continue to do so. Voting for the Social Democrats means saving the Marrakata Commission and other indigenous rights bodies because LNP is in a race to repeal them all. The LNP largely didn't understand the bill back then, and I don't think they understand it now. It is currently reconciliation week, and important date into the calendar for indigenous people, marking This time, the Social Democrats promise to pressure the Government to stop racism, stop using our brothers and sisters as tokens as they do every time, we will pressure the Government to recognise the Aboriginals as the first community within the Constitution and law, we will also take the Government to task on ensuring to bridge the gap between us and the rest of the country. Pav is relieved that he could answer another question and begins timing so he can try doing a sprint run and before he could, there pops another question G’day mate! Raj here. I am a labourer in the nearby construction company, we are often ridiculed for our status, what will SDP do for our community? I get your concerns, Raj. I have also been through such situations, with my grandparents working as Labourers and I know how you feel, I sincerely hope such discrimination no longer exists, but the current Government seeks to promote that, so why SDP for workers is a good question. I joined SDP because it supports worker communities. We promise to create legislation to treat Wage Theft as a crime equivalent to that of armed robbery and ensure the same amount of punishment is given. We also promise to extend sick leave to a period of ten days from the existing, and tighten work health and safety related laws to ensure our workers are not harassed and ensure that all workers are protected no matter what, the Social Democrats have introduced such legislation in this term already, and will continue to do so to meet the ever changing circumstances in every workplace. The Social Democrats will retain unions and always be a powerful force that workers can rely on. This COVID-19 crisis has been harsh on workers. The SDP introduced a bill to ensure that workers can. Pav now sets his timer and in 3 2 1, another pop up, this time from someone called Johanna. Hey Pav! I am Johanna or Jo, speaking from Melbourne. I am basically a Transport Buff so I am really concerned about transport. So should I ask, what will be your party policy on Transport? Hey Jo, so thanks for the question. I really commend the fact that you are a Transport Buff, reminds me of my Sister when she was a little younger, who would always speak on Transport Reforms at the dinner table. The Social Democrats during our previous stint in Government did major reforms to encourage more Public Transportation as you may have seen over the last term. This time, we will work towards preserving what we had started, and ensuring the Government does not put cuts over this in the Budget. As the SDP Manifesto clearly outlines, it is important that we move from an automobile-dependent transport sector to a Public Transport dependent transport sector, while supporting the Victorian Government’s efforts to try and remove level crossing, to ensure a speedy, safe, and sound journey for all Melbournians . We promise to create legislation to strengthen emission standards, urge the Government and bring legislation to promote pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. We also urge the Government to join Vision Zero amongst the many policies we have in mind for the transport sector. Finally Pav does a sprint run to the amazement of the YouTube Live Stream viewers and then tired with exasperation, he gets to answer another question. Hello Pav! I am Jimmy, a resident in the suburbs of Melbourne. May I ask what you will do to improve Infrastructure in our area? Hey Jimmy, growing up in the suburbs of Melbourne for sometime, I do understand your views and feelings. As our manifesto says, it is the aim of SDP to create a Modern Australia, with modern services and infrastructure. We have laid foundations in the previous Government, which I hope the current Government continues, if not, we will urge them to take it up as the Opposition. We promise to provide the highest quality of infrastructure for Melbourne and Australia. We have promised to give the entire Australia and Melbourne Fibre Optic Internet and expand internet coverage understanding that Internet has now become a necessity. We will create legislation to urge the Government to create gender-neutral bathrooms, and end the private monopoly on all public schools, hospitals and prisons to ensure that there exists the highest quality of infrastructure without private gain. We also promise to get legislation for ensuring the Government builds more Public Housing in Melbourne and Australia. Pav then tries a few stretching exercises, and notices the time and begins to understand that he needs to be running back home and exits Edinburgh Gardens to see a final pop up from a lady named ChristinaXOXO Hey Pav! As a Candidate for our division, may I ask what message do you wish to share at this juncture when we are all facing a pandemic? Hello Christina, thanks for that question. I am really feeling as though I have made something huge and you are asking me for a message. The feeling is actually great. First, I would urge all of you to follow the Government advice on the Coronavirus, it is the most important item right now, we need to work with everyone and follow advice to fight this epidemic together. Follow it unlike my fellow candidate from the Liberals who forgets its existence though it is their party which made those rules. As far as this election is concerned, over this entire campaign, I believe me and my team have focused as much as possible to show the people of Melbourne that the current Government and its allies are not suitable for Melbourne, which has Indigenous Australians and immigrants. This Government should have existed in the 19th century rather than now, due to their values, to prevent further disaster, I would urge all of you to vote for SDP this by-election to preserve your values and beliefs. He finally gets a chance to visit the nearby cavallini and gets a coffee and pastry to support local businesses and then enter his car and drive it back home, excited to have breakfast and play a game of Civilization VI with his brand new PC and urges everyone to vote SDP
2020.05.15 16:38 mike_caoSun yang's supporter confusiousists constantly threaten harassing Mack Horton's family for 4years
Mack poked the dragon and parents paid price Gangs outside the home, constant threats, their business hacked... four years after swimmer Mack Horton outed a Chinese rival as a drug cheat, his family still pays the price. （from 悉尼奶爸） On a mild October day last year Cheryl Horton was cleaning the backyard pool at the family home – a chore she rigorously avoids until it can be ignored no longer – when the vacuum head made a curious grinding sound. She raised the appliance, felt beneath it, and winced with pain. Blood coursed down her hand, dripping into the pale water. She called to her husband, Andrew, and together they discovered a “bucketload” of broken glass on the floor of the pool. She holds one of these centimetre-thick glass chunks, glinting like a rough-cut diamond, as she speaks. “We keep it on the desk in the study,” she says, “as a reminder of how bad things got.” The couple knew immediately where the broken glass had come from, and why it was there. Just three months earlier their son, Olympic 400m freestyle gold medallist Mack Horton, had refused to join Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, a three-time Olympic gold medallist and 11-time world champion, on the medal podium at the World Championships in the South Korean city of Gwangju. Horton had just won silver in the 400m freestyle; Sun Yang gold. Mack Horton’s mute protest – standing up for clean sport by refusing to stand beside Sun – unleashed a wave of hostility more disturbing than anything the family had ever experienced. And since their son famously labelled Sun a drug cheat at the 2016 Rio Olympics, they’ve experienced a lot. “We’ve had so many death threats that we’ve stopped taking them seriously,” says Andrew with a grim chuckle. At the Rio Olympics, before competition had even begun, Horton says Sun tried to provoke him in a warm-up pool by splashing water and hurling abuse as they both paused at the ends of their lanes. Asked by a reporter afterwards about the contretemps, Mack coolly replied that Sun had “splashed me to say hello, and I didn’t respond because I don’t have time for drug cheats”. “That was the moment our lives changed,” says Andrew. “That’s when it all started.” Mack’s remark in Rio, a reference to a three-month suspension his Chinese rival had served in 2014 for taking a banned stimulant, detonated across all forms of media – print, television and internet – with the force of a depth charge. Within 45 minutes, some 680,000 slurs, insults and death threats had assailed Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the Chinese social media platform Weibo. His Wikipedia entry was later trolled. Mack was dog shit, a racist, destined for the Paralympics, and perhaps a nuclear bomb strike. He must apologise. Or else. A week later, with Mack and his parents still in Rio, there was a break-in at the family home in the blue-chip Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris. Andrew’s business – he runs an educational technology company – also began to experience relentless cyber attacks that could only be mitigated, he says, by denying access from China. After Mack’s theatrical and somewhat passive-aggressive follow-up protest in South Korea last year, “the hate”, as the family calls it, rose to another level of intensity. Dog turds were hurled at the family home; their trees and plants were poisoned. A passing parade of youths gathered at the back fence to chant slogans while banging pots and pans in the dead of night, or stood in the driveway hurling abuse. Someone who spoke broken English took to phoning Andrew every second day to detail what he would like to do to his daughter (he has no daughter). And there was the broken glass in the family pool. “The biggest change was the intensity,” says Andrew. “It was unrelenting. Every day and night in the second half of 2019, peaking in September, easing off in February this year.” It relented in the same month that Sun received an eight-year suspension for destroying a blood sample in an out-of-competition doping test. Horton, who has regular and ongoing security briefings about threats to his family, has been informed that his assailants call themselves “Confucianists”. The 5th century BC Chinese philosopher has been revived in recent years as a national icon by a Chinese Communist Party seeking ethical moorings outside its founding credo of Maoism, and his name has become a codeword for Chinese nationalism. Sun himself seemed to invite a nationalist interpretation of Horton’s comments in Rio, saying: “Disrespecting me was OK, but disrespecting China was unfortunate.” Andrew harbours no ill-will towards Sun’s supporters, believing on the advice of security officials that they are acting under instructions from the Chinese Communist Party, either directly or indirectly, and “have little choice”. He is concerned, in fact, that some of them will be “beaten up, or worse, if they don’t comply”. He declines, on security grounds, to specify the assistance given to his family by police and security agencies; he’ll only say that he is “very grateful”. The fenced-in suburban family home is by social convention a kingdom, but for the Hortons it is a kingdom under siege. The family’s challenges are part of a broader pattern of harassment and intimidation of the Chinese Communist Party’s critics and dissenters. Says a national security analyst who keeps a close eye on the case, and spoke on condition of anonymity: “The Hortons’ story is very disturbing... It says something about the reach of foreign powers within Australia.” Clive Hamilton, professor of public ethics at Charles Sturt University, tells me: “Australians should know that China’s secretive Ministry of State Security has been carrying out a campaign of intimidation in this country against critics of the regime. It’s illegal and nasty.” Hamilton, co-author of the upcoming Hidden Hand: Exposing How the Chinese Communist Party is Reshaping the World, says ASIO is trying to monitor activities of this kind. “I hope we see some arrests and prosecutions soon. When that happens, we can expect the usual hysterical denials and calculated outrage from the Chinese embassy, state newspapers and the Party-affiliated Chinese-language media in Australia.” It’s understood that no arrests have been made in the Horton case, which has been kept from the public gaze. The Hortons report a “constantly revolving cast of characters” at their fence and in their driveway. If any were apprehended by police they would be questioned, cautioned, released, and another would take their place. “This is not an amateur operation,” remarks a security insider. Politically motivated attacks on non-Chinese Australians are rare, but not unknown. In July last year a University of Queensland student, Drew Pavlou, a vocal critic of the university’s ties with Chinese organisations, says he was assaulted while leading a pro-Hong Kong rally on campus. “In the aftermath I saw my social media flooded by hundreds of abusive messages from supporters of the Chinese government,” says Pavlou, who is Greek-Australian. “There were dozens of threats in Mandarin and English. They threatened to kill me and my family, to rape my mother. It’s a terror tactic to silence critics of the Chinese government.’’ Another position on the spectrum of debate about Chinese influence in Western society is occupied by John Keane, professor of politics at the University of Sydney, who warns about the “prejudice known as Orientalism” and points to “the treatment of Sun Yang by Australian xenophobes”. Sun rose to fame in China when he became the first Chinese man to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming in 2012 (he won two: the 400m and 1500m). So when Horton defeated the Chinese superstar in the 400m in Rio, on the evening of August 6, 2016, it was bound to ramp up tensions. Almost immediately Swimming Australia, the sport’s governing body, received letters from its Chinese equivalent threatening reprisals over Horton’s “drug cheat” claims. Shortly after the expiry of the deadline these letters had set for an apology, Swimming Australia’s website was hacked and crashed. Around this time, the Australian Census website went down after it was hit by concerted cyber attacks launched from overseas, in a major embarrassment for the Turnbull government and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Some tech commentators have speculated that these attacks were part of the blowback from Rio. But there was one lighter moment to the post-Rio backlash. Horton’s coach, Craig Jackson, took six months off to travel around South America and in the jungles of Colombia he met a group of British students who told of a friend in the UK by the name of Matt Horton. “His Instagram account had been bombarded with insults by Sun’s supporters,” Jackson says. “He even wrote to Mack to ask him to please apologise.” The Hortons are happy to tell the story of their “grand adventure”, as they like to call it – and in the telling, to put it behind them. I catch up for a video call with Andrew, 53, and Cheryl, 52, a month after the announcement of Sun Yang’s eight-year ban – a punishment that will likely end his career, barring a successful appeal. It’s late March, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have just been postponed. Mack, a 24-year-old La Trobe University business management student when he is not chewing up laps in the pool, marked the suspension of training with his first drink in a long time – a negroni – and a handful of almond croissants. But now he has been advised to “shut down” any media engagements amid security concerns: his mother had spied a “serious” drone above the house. Things that had once seemed extraordinary – death threats, abuse, home invasions – are now the wallpaper of their domestic lives. Andrew insists that his son’s protest in South Korea last year was as unrehearsed as his “drug cheat’’ remark in Rio. “It’s not about the result and it’s not about China and it’s not about Sun Yang,” he says. “For Mack, it’s all about clean sport.” Andrew and Cheryl were in the stands at Rio watching the races when they felt the first ripples of all this. “I saw John Bertrand [president of Swimming Australia] and Mark Anderson [CEO] running towards us with a bunch of support staff,” Andrew recalls. “John asked if I’d had a conversation with Mack about what he was going to say about Sun Yang and I said, ‘No. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve no idea what he’s going to say’. At that point John told me [that Mack had made the drug cheat claim] and I went, ‘Oh… ok-ay’.” Immediately, and without his knowledge, a Brazilian special forces commando was assigned to shadow the swimmer. His parents, too, had protection; wherever they went they noticed the same two “friendly” young men nearby. “It was only when we were leaving the hotel and saw them putting machine guns into the boot that the penny dropped,” says Cheryl. Since the Rio games there have been suggestions that Mack’s outing of Sun, made between the heats and the final, was merely astute pre-event gamesmanship: in the 400m freestyle final Sun was more than one and a half seconds off his winning London Olympics time, and immediately after the race was filmed in tears. Others speculate that it was a way for Mack, at his first Olympics, to spur himself on. He told reporters after the event: “The last 50 metres I was thinking about what I said and what would happen if he gets me here.” Craig Jackson tells me there was “no preconceived plan to say any of that, but after he made the comments he had to live up to his words. Mack certainly enjoys the big stage, and there is no stage bigger than the Olympics.” The heats for Mack’s other big event, the 1500m freestyle, were held the following week. The night before, during an interview for Australian television, Andrew noticed his phone light up with text messages. Two suspicious vans had been spotted outside the family’s home, where their other son Chad was preparing for his Year 12 exams. Andrew shows me one of the texts from a concerned neighbour, which reads: “The garage door was open and so was the house and Mila [the family dog] is missing. The alarm is going off now I am waiting for the police to arrive.” Cheryl cuts a sharp look at her husband as he tells me this. “This is news to me as well,” she says. “Well I’m letting you know,” Andrew continues. “At around that time the school contacted us by SMS to say they were getting threats concerning Chad. He was actually doing a practice exam so he was escorted out of the school and spent the rest of the Olympics at his mate’s house.” Nothing was stolen from the home, and the dog eventually returned. “By the time the police arrived they’d hightailed it.” Mark Anderson, former CEO of Swimming Australia, vividly recalls meeting the Hortons in a stairwell of the stadium at Rio soon after their son’s victory in the 400m freestyle. “They were trying to celebrate what was the biggest moment in Mack’s career,” he says. “I was hearing of the break-in at home where the son was still living. They were concerned about Mack in the intense environment in Rio and their son a world away at home. They were justifiably concerned about the safety of both children. The celebration was tinged with concern – it was etched on their faces. But it says something about them that they were able to conduct themselves with dignity throughout.” The following year Mack Horton told reporters that the ferocity of the blowback – the threats and harassment aimed at him and his family – had changed nothing. “I think I would do the same thing even if I knew the outcome.” And so, two years later, he did. Andrew and Cheryl were back in the stands to cheer on their son at the World Championships in South Korea. They didn’t know he was considering another protest. “But in hindsight we knew something was going to happen,” Cheryl admits. “There was an expectation – you could feel it in the air. Either Mack was going to protest, or someone else would.” Her son’s actions are immortalised in the iconography of competitive sport. In footage of the event, silver medallist Mack, lantern-jawed and bespectacled like a blond Clark Kent, congratulates Italian bronze medallist Gabriele Detti with a handshake but ignores his gold medallist Chinese rival. When it dawns on Sun that Horton won’t stand next to him on the podium his expression stiffens, and he offers a strained smile. None of the three medal winners in this awkward tableau seems to be playing the standard part: Horton, the steely protester, is resolute yet anxious, uncertain. Nor is there much joy in the smiles Sun and Detti are able to muster. When the trio walks off the stage Sun waves to the crowd, but his smile has once again curdled; Horton brings up the rear with long strides, arms clasped behind his back. Fresh in the mind of Horton and every swimmer at those championships was a recent report in the UK Sunday Times detailing how three anti-doping testers had arrived at Sun’s home in September 2018 to administer out-of-competition blood and urine tests. Blood was taken at a nearby clubhouse. In the early morning, after a clash between Sun and the officials about their accreditation, qualifications and behaviour – followed by a lengthy standoff – blood samples were allegedly destroyed by Sun’s entourage on the instructions of Sun’s mother Ming Yang. In January 2019 – three weeks before publication of the damning Sunday Times investigation – the sport’s global governing body, FINA, had cleared Sun of wrongdoing on a technicality. So when Mack Horton refused to mount the winners’ podium his protest was as much against FINA’s inaction as it was against Sun. As the medal ceremony was playing out he heard roars of approval from his fellow athletes. But his parents, who were sitting in a spectator stand opposite, heard only the boos and jeers from Sun Yang’s supporters. “It ramped up after that,” recalls Andrew. Next day a security official told him that in 24 hours “Australian consular officials in China had received more than nine million messages and not one of them was pleasant”. The day after, his company was again targeted. The following day father and son spoke. It was a testy conversation. “In the athlete’s village they have very little idea of what’s happening outside,” says Andrew. “Athletes turn off their social media and disconnect. I explained to Mack that while I fully support his stance, he just needs to be mindful that these things have flow-on implications. It’s the only time we’ve had a serious disagreement.” “But if nobody stands up, nothing changes,” says Cheryl. “I get that,” replies Andrew, turning to address his wife directly. “But he just hadn’t considered the full implications.” Mack’s silent snub again made global news. It also set off a chain reaction. A few days later British swimmer Duncan Scott, who was placed joint third in the 200m freestyle, also refused to join Sun for pictures on the winner’s podium or to shake his hand. Sun confronted Scott and called him a “loser”. Scott and Mack received official warnings from FINA, and both were overwhelmed by death threats from Sun’s fans on social media. Craig Jackson, Mack’s coach, wasn’t in South Korea that night. He recalls a conversation with Mack a week before the championships that suggested his charge was stewing over the issue of clean sport, and might have been pondering a protest. “I don’t recall the exact words,” Jackson says. “But he didn’t rule it out... We’d spoken a lot about clean sport, and I knew his position. He’s true to his values.” He watched Mack’s protest at the medal presentation from his lounge. “To be honest I agree 100 per cent with the statement he’s making but as a coach I’m sitting there going, ‘You know, I’d prefer you didn’t do that.’” Mack was well aware of the burden borne by his family after the comment about Sun in Rio. Why then, having poked the dragon and felt the heat, go for Sun again in South Korea? “It says something about his laser-like focus on swimming as well as he can and as fast as he can, and his feelings about fairness in his sport,” Andrew reflects. “And I think he is insulated from a lot of things. One day he’ll have a family of his own and he’ll look back with a better appreciation of how much background support he had.” Mack later spelt out what the protest was, and wasn’t, about: “This isn’t a China-Australia thing. This isn’t a China versus the world thing. This is a principle in the way the sport is governed and controlled.” In February this year FINA’s decision to clear Sun was overturned on an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Authority to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which slapped Sun with an eight-year suspension. The unanimous verdict was a blow to FINA’s prestige and authority, and to Sun and his family’s fortunes. And it was a stunning vindication of Mack Horton’s stance. Andrew Horton is inclined to view Sun – an only child with boyish movie-star looks who is unafraid to show his emotions in victory or in loss – as the “victim” of an enormously powerful system with a vast global reach. He points to a recent post from Ming Yang, made after her son’s eight-year ban, in which she alleges an official cover-up over his 2014 doping penalty and rages against his legal team at the CAS hearing. Chinese authorities had initially kept Sun’s three-month suspension in 2014 under wraps, revealing it to the public after he had competed in the Asian Games of September that year. In her since deleted post, Ming Yang alleges that the Chinese Swimming Association manipulated the timing of the news so that his results at the Asian Games – three gold and one silver – would remain intact. In her post Ming Yang gives a touching insight into the family life of a Chinese swimming star: “I couldn’t sleep at night, powerless and helpless. My son struggled in the swimming pool for more than 20 years, and was strangled by power and lies.” Even at the age of 10, before swimming had taken hold of his life, Mack Horton was unusually attuned to the spirit of fair play. “This is a kid who as a young basketball player used to throw the ball to players on the other team who he thought weren’t getting a fair go,” recalls his father. “Needless to say, he didn’t get very far with basketball.” In another life Mack’s sensitivity to injustice might have propelled him into an altruistic profession, but his mother’s feeling for water had a large bearing on his passion for the pool. When Cheryl first started dating the man she would marry – both hail from Perth – a big moment in their courtship was her discovery of his family’s pool. “I could never get her out of the water,” Andrew recalls. “Cheryl and the boys just love the water: the feeling of it flowing over their bodies. It’s in their DNA. It’s like a drug.” Asked if she recalls how she passed on this passion to her youngest son, Cheryl makes a dunking motion. “He was a reluctant swimmer,” she laughs. “Scared of the water. But once he put his head under he loved it. He couldn’t stop.” By 2008, 12-year-old Mack was showing great promise – he had the hunger and what his father describes as the “natural metrics of a world-class swimmer”. Even then, though, Andrew wasn’t sure if Mack knew what he was letting himself in for: the pain as well as, just perhaps, the fame. “Do you really want this?” he asked his son one day. Mack turned towards him with a “deadset straight in the eyes” gaze. “But Dad, you don’t seem to understand,” he said. “When I swim I feel like I’m flying. And the faster I swim the better it feels.” Andrew felt his chest tighten, as if he had seen his future. He called Cheryl to say, “We’re going to have to get used to this. It’s not going to go away. It’s going to need the support of the whole family.” “I knew it would have a huge impact,” he tells me. “Swimming can be brutal on families.” And yet Mack “loved the toughness”, Andrew says. “The pain was nothing to him.” He wanted it so badly that some time in his 13th year he pasted the world record time for the 1500m freestyle on his ceiling. The Hortons like to think of themselves as an “ordinary” family; in their pursuit of normality they’ve banished swimming trophies and photos – even swimming as a conversation topic – from the family home. But they’ve kept the old 1500m record on the ceiling of Mack’s room. “We kept telling him as he was growing up that he was an ordinary person who did some extraordinary things,” says Andrew. The desire to ground the child who was flying in the pool is one reason Andrew and Cheryl felt no shame forcing their myopic son onto the tennis court from time to time. “It was a way of bringing home to him that he was just a mug like the rest of us.” The way Andrew tells it, Mack’s alma mater, Caulfield Grammar, approached him in January last year for guidance with its new $25 million aquatic centre. Both father and son were chuffed by the idea. Andrew was on good terms with the school and he, together with Craig Jackson, who was asked for his expertise in high performance swimming programs, offered their help. “For most of the year we were talking with the school once or twice a week,” he recalls. “Mack and I also were participating in school events.” But around October – three months after Mack’s protest in Gwangju and coincidentally the same month Cheryl found a bucketload of glass in the family pool – Andrew and Craig felt the school had cooled towards them. Calls that were once answered promptly were now ignored. Around this time, Andrew believes, the school’s contract with its Nanjing campus in China, which hosts Caulfield Grammar’s Year 9 students each year for a five-week program, came up for renegotiation. The school’s Wikipedia entry makes no mention of Mack Horton in its entry on sporting alumni. Instead it notes the achievements of Chris Judd and John Schultz – Brownlow Medallists – and John Landy, who held the men’s mile record in the 1950s. In February this year, after media reports alleged that Caulfield Grammar had scrapped plans to name its aquatic centre after Mack Horton, principal Ashleigh Martin moved to defuse the issue, labelling the reports incorrect. “The school has not started a process for naming the facility after any individual, or decided at this time if it will be named after any individual,” the statement read. “Caulfield Grammar School and its community have great pride, respect and admiration for Mack Horton, as both an Olympic swimmer and as a Caulfield Grammarian.” While Andrew points out that “swimming fast doesn’t entitle you to have a building named after you”, he has at least one powerful ally in Gina Rinehart, Swimming Australia’s patron. “Like many Australians I was very surprised in relation to Caulfield Grammar, as any school should be thrilled to bits to be able to have Mack as alumni,” she tells me by email. “I did ask his parents if they would like me to write to the school to mention this on Mack’s behalf, but they did not wish this, saying Mack’s focus is on training.” Things have changed dramatically for the Hortons since Sun Yang was given the eight-year ban. The “hate” has lost much of its heat. Sun, disgraced, has been derided online by many of his former fans; Mack, once widely vilified, has been publicly vindicated. Andrew, who claims to have much sympathy for Sun and his parents, shares, at the very least, something of their pain as families dedicated to their athletically elite offspring. Mack Horton was prepared to make a stand for clean sport. But there is a pyrrhic quality to his moral victory, for it has taken a heavy toll on family, friends, neighbours and a largely invisible web of support. “It’s been a grand adventure,” reflects Andrew. “But it’s certainly not what we anticipated when we chose to encourage our children in sport.” （悉尼奶爸）
2020.05.08 03:58 SkyBruceLee23Solace Dynamic Daddy - Novel Concept/Short Story
Hi guys I attempted to write a novel six years ago and instead it became a short story. I got discouraged after I sent my story to literary agents and publishers and got nothing but rejections. I came across the story in my email and it reignited my imagination. The story I wrote isn't perfect and it has a few mistakes but I wrote it back in 2014. I wanted to get an opinion from you guys. I hope you guys like it even though it's a rough draft. I even created a cover to my story and I imagined that it was a published novel. The cover to the story is in my profile. Yeah, I know that sounds insane. So here's my old story and the title of it is Solace Dynamic Daddy. If you guys like my story, please share it. I wrote it to make it like an action movie. CHAPTER ONE Adam held his son Jaden with one arm as he folded up a shirt. The father smiled laying a kiss on his child, and watching the four year old as he tried to help him fold his tank top. Adam chuckled watching his son assist him in laying his tank top inside of his luggage. Jaden giggled when his father tickled him unexpectedly. The child grabbed on to his father’s jeans, helping his daddy fold up the pair of pants, and looking over his daddy’s shoulder when he heard the footsteps of his mother entering the bedroom. “Aw look at my baby.” Vivian said through a giggle walking up and kissing her son on the lips. Jaden grinned at his mother after her lips came in contact with his little mouth. Adam smiled while turning his head to kiss his wife. The man locked on to his wife’s moist full lips being reminded that it was not only his wife’s beauty and personality that hooked him when they first met. It was her kiss that told him that she was the definitely the woman for him. “I can’t believe were going to Aruba.” Vivian gave her child and her husband an excited stare. She studied the Australian morning sunlight as it shined in through the bedroom window resting against the side of her son’s face. “We’re going to walk along the sandy shores on the beach. Go swimming in the ocean.” Vivian whispered slightly to her son slowly taking him out of his father’s arms. “Daddy said there’s no trauma engineers in Aruba. Is Aruba safe just like where we live?” Jaden asked his mother making himself comfortable beneath her warm and shapely arms. Vivian looked at her husband while fixing her mouth to answer her son. “There’s no trauma engineers in a Aruba just like where we live baby. Your daddy’s right. So me you and your daddy are going to be safe. We‘re gonna have a safe and fun filled trip to paradise.” Vivian told her child as she rubbed the tip of her nose against his. Adam kept his smiling eyes on his wife and son. He entertained his wife and child by using his telekinesis to fold a pair of his khaki shorts. Jaden giggled uncontrollably as he watched his father fold his pair of shorts without touching them. “Look at what daddy‘s doing?” Adam chuckled entertaining his son and using his mind to make his pair of khaki shorts do the moonwalk in midair while floating around the bedroom. Vivian started laughing watching as her husband’s khaki shorts dance around the bedroom as if they were possessed. She smirked looking around at Adam to see a sapphire tinged white light that was beginning to emit from his eyes. Vivian loved it when Adam would use his telekinesis in the bedroom. It was a turn on for her to watch her husband’s eyes light up like a flash of lightning. Adam was enjoying his son’s laughter as he continued to play with his khaki shorts. Jaden started laughing harder and harder as he watched the light in his daddy’s eyes flicker like a car’s headlights switching from it’s high beams to low beams. “You better stop doing that before you activate your tattoo, and they come looking for us,” Vivian joked with her husband knowing that the cyber smart tattoo that was permanently integrated into the skin on Adam’s left shoulder, was no longer functional and had been shutdown due to a computer virus known as the Deprivator. Adam turned off his telekinesis while pulling down the collar of his shirt to look at the dead tattoo on his muscular shoulder. The man didn’t want to retrace the memories of his past nor the program that he was in that manufactured the tattoo. Adam pulled his collar back up over his shoulder. He lifted his warm eyes back up at his wife and son, praying to God that his family will never come in contact with a trauma engineer again. And also hoping that his kind will soon one day out number the trauma engineer organization that his government designed and built to keep hospitals in business. A trauma engineer had already taken his eight year old daughter away from him. Even though Adam was blessed with the ability to heal diseases. It haunted him that he could not heal his daughter Sameya from a manufactured disease. Vivian watched a distraught expression form on her husband’s face. She automatically knew that he was thinking about their deceased child. Even though Sameya was Vivian’s step child. The woman remembered how she came close to hating god for taking the life of her baby. But after two years she came to the conclusion that it was not god that took her stepdaughter’s life but the product of top secret government technology gone wrong. Government technology that was supposed to help people, but instead its putting the CEOs of healthcare companies back on the market. “You okay honey?” Vivian asked reaching up to touch her husband’s face when she saw the muscle at the left corner of his mouth twitch slightly which would happen whenever he would feel depressed or angry. Adam quickly brought a smile back to his face when he saw his wife looking concerned. “I’m fine. I was just thinking about something. I was thinking how it’s so nice for us to be able to travel and not have to worry about where we’re traveling to. I really wish those Deprivator satellites existed when my baby was here.” Adam paused as he gazed at his son. “I’m hope that those satellites don’t go down and that network stays up. That’s the only thing that’s keeping those engineers at bay except in the middle east. I already lost one flower in my garden. I don’t want to lose another.” Adam studied his wife and son’s matching dimples. He took hold of Vivian’s hand which was still touching the side of his face. While also raising his hand to caress his son’s forehead. Jaden played with his father’s hand which was now swallowing up both of his little palms. “We better finish packing. We got to be at the airport before ten.” Adam said wanting to keep holding hands with his wife and son. He turned back around to finish packing his suitcase but the folding of his pajama pants was interrupted when he heard the dance-pop ringtone coming from his android phone. Vivian saved her husband the trouble of having to walk around the bed to get his phone off the nightstand. “It’s Lela,” Vivian said looking down at the woman’s face which had appeared over the phone’s touch screen. Jaden smiled when he saw his aunt’s face displayed over the screen. He followed his aunties face and his mother’s hand which was slowly handing the phone over to his father. Adam thanked his wife taking the phone out of her hand and looking down to see that it was his sister. He used his telekinesis to finish folding his pajama pants while answering his phone. “Hey Trick Mama. What’s up?” Adam answered his sister calling her by her nickname. He could hear her lips puffing on the tip of her cigarette. “Hey Nightbaby,” Lela said calling her little brother by his nickname and returning the affection. “I got some bad news and some good news to tell you.” Lela paused for a second allowing the smoke in her lungs to exit back out through her nose and mouth. “The bad news is that a faulty firmware upgrade caused one of the satellites to go down. The tower was down for about an hour, and we’re hoping that within that hour a trauma engineer wasn’t able to slip past the network. An hour would be enough time for at least one to get into Melbourne without any problems.” Adam took a deep breath as he listened to the bad news that his sister was telling him. A burning concern immediately arose inside of him as he tried to figure out how a firmware upgrade could’ve shutdown one of the Deprivator satellites. “What’s the good news?” Adam waited holding his smartphone against his ear while worryingly looking around at his wife and son. “The good news is that a simple system restore put the tower back to it’s original firmware. We were able to upgrade the rest of the satellites to the new firmware. But that one satellite was the only one that f*cked up during the upgrade. It’s back up but it’s just one version behind the rest of them. But don’t worry sweetie, the network is back up and going strong. So if a trauma engineer did manage to slip through while that tower was down. He or she is definitely dead by now because of this new firmware signal. Your family is safe, and the city of Melbourne is safe.” Lela reassured her brother when she heard him taking nervous deep breaths. Adam nodded wanting to believe his sister. He calmed himself checking the time on his watch and giving his wife and son a slight smile. “God has given us a gift. If we continue to do our jobs as Solace Dynamic men and women. The word healthcare will be obsolete.” Lela let out a short giggle. She was about to open her mouth to say something else but paused when Adam started talking. “There’s one disease out there that we can’t cure. A Manufactured disease that we haven’t mastered yet. If the government keeps building this disease. We’re going to be in trouble. The X7 has been out there for ten years now, and we have the ability to suppress it but not cure it. The only thing we have to counter the disease for right now, is those antivirus capsules which only protects someone from be infect for a few days. After that bio-suit that the pill creates wears off on your skin. You’re right back at the risk of being infected. I’m praying that God will give us the power to stop the X7. The X7 virus took my baby‘s life,” Adam thought about his daughter, pausing for a minute. “If we can find a way to stop the trauma engineering program from creating more diseases, and put a stop on the one that they’ve already built. This world will be a paradise.” Adam sighed as he went back to using his telekinesis to finish packing his suitcase. He took the phone away from his ear when a strange and loud frying sound suddenly disturbed the phones network. “What the hell was that?” Lela asked her brother after the frying sound quickly disappeared. Adam couldn’t make sense of the strange sounding disturbance as he put his phone back up to his ear. “I don’t know what that was.” Adam said feeling a little dizzy from the strange disturbance which had not only interfered with his phone, but also the celestial power that was being controlled by a transcendent computer chip inside of his head. “I wish the Deprivator network was more effective in the U.S. But the network doesn’t work in certain states. Only forty percent of America is protected. That’s why so many people are moving out of the United States and coming to live here and in Europe. London is protected. Japan is protected. Russia is protected. Most of the world is protected except for the U.S. and the middle east.” Lela stopped talking when she heard her nephew laughing in the background from his father making funny faces at him. “Is that my little nephew I hear laughing.” Lela asked. Adam kept making funny faces at his son while answering his sister. “Yeah. You want to say hi to your nephew?.” Adam asked Lela enjoying his son’s laughter. He took Jaden out of his wife’s arms when Lela asked to speak to him. “Hi auntie!” Jaden giggled while speaking to her. The little boy pressed his daddy’s smartphone against his ear soothed by his auntie Lela’s voice. “Hi sweetie. You excited about go to Aruba with your mommy and daddy?” Lela laughed listening to her nephew release an angelic giggle. “Yeah I’m excited. Mommy said that there’s no trauma engineers in a Aruba.” Jaden looked around at his mother who was giving him an adoring smile. “Your mommy is right there are no trauma engineers there. Your going to enjoy yourself. They say that Aruba is like being in heaven.” Lela could here her nephew gasp in excitement. “Really!” The child said excitedly. He enjoyed his aunties description of the tropical island. Lela chuckled as she listened to Jaden tell his daddy what she had said about Aruba. “I love you. Tell your mother I said hi for me okay baby.” “Okay,” Jaden smiled listening to the smooching sounds that his auntie was making in his ear. The child was about to hand the phone back to his daddy but the android phone got interrupted by the same strange frying noise that had interrupted the connection earlier. “Hello Lela? Lela can you hear me?” Adam could barely hear his sister who was also calling his name trying to make out his voice through the frying noise. The man became frustrated when the disturbing noise caused his phone to disconnect. Adam shook off the slight dizziness that was caused by the noise. He tossed his phone down on the bed before giving his son a kiss on his forehead. “What happened?” Vivian asked sitting down on the edge of the bed and looking up at Adam. Adam shrugged his shoulders confused over what had happened. “I don’t know what that was. I’m thinking maybe the interference was coming from that Deprivator satellite that went down.” Vivian’s eyes widened when her husband said that. “I hope that’s not it. Lela said that the satellite is back up right?” Vivian asked. Her voice filled with concern. Adam molded his hand against the side of his wife’s face not wanting her to worry. “She said that the satellite was down for about an hour. But its back up and running. The only problem is its running on its old firmware while the other satellites are up to date. As long as it does its job and keeps this city protected. We have nothing to be worried about.” Adam smiled while gently bouncing his son up and down with one arm. Vivian took hold of her husband’s hand which was still touching her face watching him as he finished telekinetically packing his suitcase. Adam zipped up his luggage while looking around the room to make sure he had packed everything. “Alright, I think we’re ready to go. The car is packed. All I have to do is put this in the trunk.” Adam smiled pulling his suitcase off of the bed and holding it up. Vivian stood up from the bed grabbing her purse and following behind Adam who was holding his son in one arm and his suitcase in the other. Adam remembered that his smartphone was still laying on the bed. Using his powers. He commanded his phone to arise from the bed and follow him. Vivian turned her head watching as the android phone followed them out of the bedroom and into the hallway. “Hey honey could you grab that for me?” Adam asked when he saw his phone floating in the air beside her. Vivian took hold of the phone as she walked down the stairs. The woman was startled a little when her husband’s ringtone of Pharrell’s Marilyn Monroe started playing through the phone. “It’s your sister again trying to call you back.” Vivian handed her husband the phone. Adam was about to answer his sister. But when he pressed the talk button. The frying sound prevented him from even being able to hear his sister’s voice on the other end. “Lela! Lela can you hear me?! Hello?! What the hell is going on?” Adam became more and more frustrated by the unnerving frying noise that was disrupting the phone’s connection. He had to disconnect his phone when the frying noise almost made him drop his son. “Adam! Adam honey!” Vivian shouted. She panicked when it looked like her husband was about to pass out. Adam caught himself using the front door to catch his balance. The man had dropped his suitcase, putting his hand up to his head and trying hard to regain his balance. Jaden climbed out of his daddy’s arms. The little boy touched his daddy’s face after watching his daddy kneel down on the floor hoping that the whirling sensation in his head would stop. “Daddy? Daddy your eyes are flashing.” Jaden said rubbing his father across the head and watching his eyes flicker on and off like a faulty light bulb. Adam took a deep breath shaking off his dizziness and looking up at the frightened faces of his wife and son. Vivian had kneeled down beside her husband caressing his head and trying to figure out how she was going to call a number for the ambulance that didn‘t exist anymore. The number was 000 which was Australia‘s 911. Since there was no use for ambulances and hospitals anymore because of the Solace Dynamic organization. The Australian government decided to terminate the emergency number to save money and replace it with a number for the Solace Dynamic emergency Department. Vivian’s mind stopped racing. The woman looked slightly relieved when her husband gave her a slight smile before calmly standing back up when he felt his equilibrium come back to him. “I’m okay. I just lost my balance for a second.” Adam said catching his breath and comforting his wife and son. “Daddy’s okay. He just felt a little dizzy that’s all.” Adam reached down stroking his son across his head after standing up completely. “What happened baby? What was that?” Vivian asked through a slight trimmer in her voice trying to figure out why the frying noise almost caused her husband to faint. Adam had no answer for his wife as he looked down at his phone wishing he could stop whatever was preventing him from being able to talk to his sister. “I don’t know if that sound is because of that Deprivator satellite or if it’s coming from another source. All I know is that when I hear it. It interferes with my Iynadom chip and makes me dizzy.” Adam calmly unlocked the front door of the house after picking his suitcase back up. Jaden took his daddy by the hand as they walked out into the balcony towards the front steps. “I made sure we got everything. I got our passports,” Vivian said pulling her keyless car remote out of her purse and hitting the remote start button to her onyx black Lexus. The luxury SUV’s 300 horse powered engine automatically came on when the signal from the remote reached its computer. Vivian started laughing watching as her husband and son held hands while playfully skipping towards her car in the driveway. Adam opened the cars power lift gate putting his luggage inside the trunk. He looked around his wife’s SUV at his car that was sitting in the garage. Vivian helped her son into the backseat of the car. She kissed her child while helping him into his booster seat. “I love you.” Vivian grinned while caressing her forehead against her child’s and listening to him giggle. Jaden put his little fingers through his mother’s scalp. He loved the sweet scent of her hair. The child caused his mother to laugh uncontrollably as he wiggled his fingers through her sleek shoulder length light brown hair. Vivian didn’t want to leave the backseat. She was enjoying her child’s fingers massaging her scalp. The only thing that put an end to her relaxing head rub was the sound of a woman’s voice coming from the garage. Vivian looked up from her child to see her husband in the garage talking to his car. I-Zereon’s sweet, powerful and attractive voice echoed out of the garage. I-Zereon was an artificially intelligent woman disguised as a late model high performance full sized sedan. She was capable of taking on other machine formations. Such as a motorcycle, an ATV, a jet ski watercraft, and also an electronic tablet, and a smartphone. What made her upset was that her designers didn’t give her the machine formation mode of an aircraft. I-Zereon wished that she had the ability to fly, and it pissed her off that she didn’t have that capability. I-Zereon was the only survivor of her kind. There were other artificial men and women like her. But most of them were killed off because of the Deprivator virus. Somehow I-Zereon’s CPU was able to withstand the virus which made her special. I-Zereon was an LMP which stood for Liquid Metallic Person. Like her counterparts. I-Zereon was built to assist the CIA, the NSA, and the U.S. military, but she went against the duties that she was designed to perform. When she saw the double crossing tactics that the CIA, the NSA and the other government divisions she worked for were pulling against her and the people that worked for them. I-Zereon’s skin was made out of a watery metallic substance called MMF. Her skin contained microscopic metamorphosing bio-bots that gave her the ability to comfortably transform her breast, hips, thighs and the rest of her 7 feet tall body into either a 4000 pound sedan or a smartphone that weighed 116 grams. “Hi I-Zereon!” Jaden said waving at I-Zereon after watching her slowly back out of the garage and into the driveway coming to a stop beside his mother’s SUV. “Hi honey!” I-Zereon replied while smoothly converting into her curvaceous female form. Vivian had been knowing I-Zereon for two years. She’s watched her morph into her different machine formations. But it would always amaze her when I-Zereon would transform from her unibody shape of a Porsche Panamera to her statuesque physique of a platinum white metallic woman. Based on how she felt, I-Zereon had the ability to change the color of her body paint if she so desired. If she was depressed on a day. She would choose a color called carbon gray metallic. It annoyed her when someone would call her a gynoid. Which was a term that applied to a humanoid robot designed to look more accurately like a human female with much more realism than a normal android, or of one with a sexual connotation. I-Zereon hated the word because it rhymed with hemorrhoids, and also the word sounded like some type of disease. Adam looked up at the cybernetic former CIA agent. He gave the manufactured woman a half smile when she reached down affectionately touching the tip of his nose. “I thought you were in dream mode. I didn’t wake you did I?” Adam asked his partner looking at the sunlight reflecting off of her white metallic body. I-Zereon shook her head while adjusting the IX definition lens in her eyes so that she could see Adam’s face more sharply. “You didn’t wake me. I was already awake. I stayed up all night surfing the internet. I couldn’t go to sleep. My ears kept picking up on this strange noise that was interrupting my neuro-processors. I don’t know where the noise was coming from. But I heard it all last night and this morning.” I-Zereon told Adam waving at Vivian. She sighed putting her hands on her hips. “ I heard the sound this morning when I while talking to your sister Lela. It was coming through my bluetooth.” I-Zereon explained while adjusting one of the straps on her long light emitting holographic dress. She smiled looking past Adam at Jaden who couldn’t take his amazed eyes off of her. “Your sister already called me and told me about the Deprivator satellite going down. I think that sound might have been a little bit of the residue from that malfunctioning satellite.” Adam nodded his head in agreement as he looked up at the sky to see a commercial plane flying past the clouds. “Whatever that sound was it mess with my Iynadom chip.” Adam said touching the side of his head. He looked up to see a commercial airliner flying through the clouds. “We better get going. Are you going to follow us to the airport in your car formation or do you want to ride in the car with us?” Adam asked I-Zereon wondering if she wanted to go into disguise and keep a low profile just in case something happened. “I think I’m gonna ride in the car with you guys. I know my body has been blessed with the ability to transform into a car, but I don’t feel like driving at the moment. And plus I want to sit next to your little one,” I-Zereon giggled looking at Jaden. Adam smiled turning around and looking at his son who was wiggling and laughing in the backseat while playing with his mother. “You guys ready to go?” Vivian asked getting out of the backseat and closing the rear passenger door after tickling her son beyond exhaustion. “Yeah we’re ready,” Adam answered his wife as he started making his way towards the car with I-Zereon following close behind. Jaden’s eyes widened when he saw I-Zereon approaching the car. The child’s excitement elevated as he watched the tall robotic woman climb into the backseat beside him. “Hi cutie,” I-Zereon said resting her smiling moon glowing artificial eyes on the four year old while reaching out and touching his short curly brown hair. “Hi,” Jaden said softly looking at I-Zereon’s digital holographic earrings. Vivian got into the driver seat looking around at her husband who was just standing by the passenger side with the passenger door open behind him. Vivian could tell by her husband’s facial expression that what he was looking at down the street wasn’t good. “Honey what’s a matter?” Vivian asked. The woman’s question was answered when she began to hear the loud cries of a woman coming from the direction in which her husband was looking. Jaden turned his head looking out of his window to see a woman in the distance running down the middle of the street holding the wounded body of her child. As the woman got closer, Adam could hear what she was screaming. “They shot my baby!!!” The woman screamed as she got closer. Blood from a gunshot wound on the side of her son’s arm was smearing across the front of her blouse. The woman was young in her late twenties. Her black hair was long, and pretty but disheveled along with her clothes as if someone or something had attacked her. “Mommy that woman’s got blood on her,” Jaden spoke nervously to his mother who was still sitting in the front seat motionless and watching as the woman was getting closer and closer to their driveway. Jaden had never seen real blood before. The only blood he was use to seeing was in his video games and in the movies. The child grew frightened as he watched the woman run faster down the street towards his mother’s car. Adam was still standing by the passenger side with the door wide open behind him. The man was hesitate on making a move to go help the woman. “Adam honey she’s coming over here,” Vivian said nervously through a gasp trying not to panic as the woman grew closer. Vivian looked around at her husband wondering why he wasn’t running around the car to go help the woman and her child. She got out of her car preparing to run towards the woman herself. “Honey mommy will be right back, don‘t look.” Vivian told her son not wanting him to be traumatized by what he was seeing. “Mrs. Valtren stay in the car! Don’t get out!” I-Zereon quickly spoke when she saw what Vivian was getting ready to do. Vivian was perplexed as she turned and looked at I-Zereon who was opening the back door getting out of the car. “Jaden sweetie cover your ears. This is going to be loud,” I-Zereon said to the child rubbing her hand across his forehead before calmly stepping out of the backseat. The robotic woman told Vivian to do the same thing. Vivian was extremely confused by the situation, but she did what I-Zereon told her. Adam looked inside the car at his son and wife concerned for their safety. Both him and I-Zereon walked around the car raising their hands towards the approaching woman. Adam was preparing to use his celestial power to shoot the woman and her son. I-Zereon was getting ready to use her supercharged star energy machine gun that was molded into her wrist. But the two of them were interrupted when they heard the loud engine of a car roaring behind them. Adam turned to see the front grill of his sister’s Olympic gold 1969 ZL1 Camero. The vintage muscle car’s tires burned the pavement as it thunderously came down the street before coming to a murderous stop with its body turning to the side from the abrupt stop just inches away from the driveway. Lela took her foot off the brake as she threw open her driver side door, jumping out and aiming her MP9 down the street at the woman and her wounded son. The rap music that echoed out of Lela’s muscle car was soon drowned out by the firing of the MP9. Adam watched as his sister started shooting at the woman and her son. The man knew that it was going to take more than the rounds of a machine pistol to take down the two CIA assassins. Vivian thought she was looking at a woman and her wounded child. But the woman watched as the mother and the wounded boy transformed into two well built men wearing charcoal black polo shirts, faded blue jeans and black steel toed boots. The men had pale and blotchy skin that looked like the flesh of a cadaver, and their eyes were darker than a moonless night. One of the agent’s reached behind his back and pulled a semi-automatic from out of his waistband aiming it straight at Lela. Adam immediately shot a burst of celestial fire out of the palm of his left hand when he saw the assassin getting ready to pull the trigger. The fire shot through the air like a missile hitting the supernatural government assassin straight in his chest and sending him airborne. The man’s body did a few rotations in the air before landing hard on the pavement of the residential street. The other trauma engineer growled in frustration after watching his partner get knocked off his feet. The bullets from Lela’s MP9 were ripping through the man’s body, but that didn’t prevent him from making a mad dash towards Adam and I-Zereon. I-Zereon activated her quasar machine gun. The sleek weapon emerged from her wrist as she aimed it straight at the trauma engineers head. A loud thunderclap filled the air from the high energy weapon firing off. The blast blew the top part of man’s head off, but the satanically fueled CIA agent was still on his feet. The trauma engineer let out a menacing roar as he reached into his pocket pulling out a small cuff shaped device and throwing it at I-Zereon. The robotic woman tried to dodge the mysterious object that was flying towards her but it was too late. Adam watched as the LMP fell to the ground after the device attached itself to the front of her throat and wrapped a steel band around her neck locking itself to her. The device was a weapon called an LMP Choker that was made to lock on to the body of an LMP and infect them with a computer virus called the Razor. The Razor was programmed to destroy the CPU and the life core of an LMP. I-Zereon had ten seconds to remove the weapon from around her neck or her body was going to be neutralized. Adam tried to help his partner remove the device but every time he would touch it the device would shock him with a jolt of electricity. Lela had unloaded all of her rounds. She tried to hurry in reloading her machine pistol to shoot the trauma engineer as he made his way towards Adam. Adam was so distracted by I-Zereon’s screams of pain that he was unable to block the heel of the agent’s steel toed boot that pummeled him full force in his torso. “Daddy!” Jaden screamed after watching his father get hit by the man. “Adam!” Vivian yelled as she jumped out of her car with her frightened mind trying to figure out how to stop the trauma engineer from killing her husband. Adam fell to the ground with the assassins foot now grinding into his chest. “No No honey stay in the car!” Adam shouted when he saw Vivian getting ready to come to his rescue. Adam used his limited telekinesis to remove the LMP Choker from around I-Zereon’s neck. The LMP Choker self destructed. The device blew up after being ripped off of the robotic woman’s neck. I-Zereon stood up getting ready to come to Adam’s aid, but a swift powerful kick from the trauma engineer sent her body tumbling back down to the ground. Adam knew that by the trauma engineer being so close him. His powers would now be limited. The man had a scar on his left bicep that reminded him that you have to keep a trauma engineer away from you at a certain distance if you were a Solace Dynamic agent and wanted to have full access to your abilities. But it was too late. Adam used the last of his telekinesis to see if he could throw the man’s body off of him, or at least get his foot off his chest. It was no use. The trauma engineer belted him with blows to his face and neck. Since Adam was a superhuman man he was able to withstand the punches which would have killed a normal human instantaneously. Adam’s hands locked on to the engineer’s foot. Using brute strength he twisted the man’s foot in the opposite direction listening to his ankle break apart. The trauma engineer was still standing even though he had one foot facing forward and his other foot facing in the opposite direction. Adam had to move quickly as he jumped up grabbing the agent around his throat and lifting him up off the ground. The trauma engineer was smart. He realized his situation grabbing Adam’s wrist with one hand and dislocating it. Adam winced in pain letting go of the man’s neck and falling to his knees. Lela used her celestial fire which was not as powerful as her brother’s but she had to do something. The trauma engineer was getting ready to stomp down on Adam’s skull but his body went back from the blast that struck him in his shoulder. Lela hadn’t used her telekinesis in a while but she had to do something as the agent made his way towards her after realigning his broken ankle and twisted foot. The other trauma engineer that had the gun and was struck in the chest by Adam, was just now waking up from his unconsciousness and was making his way towards Vivian and Jaden. Alonzo stood up from the ground after snapping his wrist back in place. He reached out grabbing the trauma engineer by the back of his neck and pulling him back towards him when he saw the agent getting ready to walk towards his sister. Lela was about to use her telekinesis, but it wasn’t necessary as she watched Adam lift the man’s body over his head like a barbell before dropping him down across his knee and snapping his spinal cord. The trauma engineer rolled across the ground grabbing back. Adam then moved his attention to the trauma engineer who was shooting at him while running towards his wife and son. Vivian shut her car door. She automatically locked all of the doors when she saw the agent getting closer. “Baby hold on!” The woman said to her terrified child as she shifted her SUV into reverse. She slammed her foot down on the accelerator backing out of her driveway and running over the body of the agent who got his spine snapped by her husband. Adam jumped out of the way of his wife’s SUV. He slapped down a bullet that was heading for the front windshield of his wife’s car. The trauma engineer was so strong and fast, that at the blink of an eye he had already lifted Adam off his feet using his index finger. The agent effortlessly threw Adam over his shoulder like a basketball player performing an over the shoulder pass. Even though the agent had gotten passed Adam. I-Zereon sent a shockwave of energy through his chest after cold cocking him in the face, sending him back in the direction he had thrown Adam. Adam was back on his feet. The man was angry, tired and ready to kill. Jumping up into the air, Adam grabbed the trauma engineers head with both hands pulling the agent’s head down on his knee and watching as the engineer stumbled backwards from the pain of the blow radiating throughout his skull. The engineer was about to perform a front elbow strike by bending his arm and swinging his elbow horizontally at Adam’s jaw. Adam counter blocked the attack. He used the trauma engineer’s own body weight to assist him in breaking the agent’s arm. Adam used the back of his neck to snap the man’s elbow. At the same time he rotated his body taking the agent’s limp arm from round his neck and lifting his over 200 pound body up into the air flipping him over his head. The agent went down hard on his back after being tossed through the air. But even while he was on the ground he used the front of his foot to strike Adam in the face. He looked over at his partner who was still laying in the driveway after being run over. Infuriated, the CIA assassin bolted up from the ground popping his elbow back in place while slowly walking towards Adam. “Was this the sound you heard this morning?!” The trauma engineer growled as he unclipped a diamond shaped device from his waistband holding it up and pressing a button on the side. Adam immediately covered his ears when he heard the familiar frying noise that caused him to almost blackout. “Was this the sound you heard this morning soldier?!” The agent mocked Adam’s suffering as he got closer. Lela pulled the trigger on the MP9 while trying to block out the nauseating sensation that the frying noise was causing her. The bullets pierced through the agents face, neck and chest causing him to drop to the ground and let go of the device that was causing Adam and Lela distress. I-Zereon caused the agent to fall completely to the ground after shooting him dead in the face with the energy machine guns in both of her wrist. The robotic woman quickly reached down grabbing the diamond shaped device after watching it fall out of the agent’s hand. “Come on lets get out of here!” Lela shouted pulling her brother towards her and continuing to shoot the agent who was trying to stand back up. Adam and I-Zereon ran into the street towards Vivian’s SUV. Adam ran around his wife’s car opening up the driver side door and jumping in. I-Zereon hopped into the backseat slamming the door. She turned to look at Jaden reaching out and caressing his face with the back of her hand trying to comfort him. “How’s my little one back there?” said Adam turning to look at his son and giving the four year old a comforting smile. Jaden smiled back at his daddy nodding his head while holding on to I-Zereon’s hand. Vivian immediately hit the gas pedal causing the engine of her Lexus to release a low rumbling roar as it took off. Lela jumped into her Camero shutting the door and speeding off behind her sister in law‘s car. Jaden turned his head looking out of the rear window to see his auntie's muscle car following close behind. The child’s heart quivered as he looked passed his auntie's car to see the two trauma engineers in the distance walking out into the street. The men were becoming less visible to Jaden as they stood motionless in the middle of the street with their arms folded.
2020.04.27 17:43 Fwoggie2Covid-19 update Monday 27th April
Good afternoon from the UK. It’s Monday 27th April. It was an up and down weekend in the Fwoggie2 household. I went and did a major grocery shop at a Tesco Extra supermarket near me (Tesco = major supermarket chain in the UK) on Friday night. The store has a one way system to navigate round the store and you’re supposed to keep 2m away from anyone else. This is almost impossible I found as I constantly had to back the hell up as people barged in to grab what they wanted and to hell with any one way system. The older they were it seemed (I’m in my 40’s), the less they cared about social distancing. It took me 2.5 hours to finally complete the shop (I had to go back for a few more things on the Saturday morning). As for Sunday, my wife was well enough to join me and the dog on a hour long walk (we never got within 10 metres of anyone else because we have lots of open countryside outside our front door so social distancing on walks is very easy to do) and the allotment got a major update; it now has 20 more white onions, over 50 red onion seeds, about 60 parsnips (which are notoriously hard to germinate especially in heavy soil like ours but it's worth a try), 7 rosemary plants and about 50 radishes. By the end of this week I hope to plant 75 carrots, 60 spring onions, 45 beetroot. The more we can grow the better; squash, courgettes/zucchini are on the agenda soon too with sweetcorn and brassicas a week or two further down the line. Life though can twist and turn in an instant; #RIPMark has been trending on UK Twitter todayas Covid-19 takes another victim here in the UK with the death count now well over 21k (if you believe the government stats) or over 41k (if you want to believe the Financial Times instead). To see an example of the British Covid-19 story in three brief tweets, click here. Failing that, please continue to stay at home if at all possible.
NYC tailor defies state order: ‘I’m opening my doors come hell or high water’ - the New York post has an article about Eliot Rabin, whose Upper East Side boutique, Peter Elliot, is known for high-end men’s and boys apparel, refuses to follow a state order closing retail business not considered essential. He insists that his $85 pocket squares and $15,000 suits are part of the fabric of New York City: “Why is a liquor store essential and I’m not?” Rabin told The Post. He admitted that many of the customers who can afford his wares have fled the city for vacation homes, but he’s here to provide “emotional essential support” for the ones still in town. The retailer is also offering them what he jokingly calls “internal vaccinations: Chivas Regal, Kentucky bourbon — have a nip and you’ll feel better.” Already he has had to dismiss 12 members of his 21-person staff, some of whom have been with him for 35 years.

UK: Home secretary Priti Patel’s announcement that the level of shoplifting has fallen compared to the year before has baffled viewers of the latest government press briefing. Whilst good news is welcome, viewers were somewhat baffled by the declaration that people were stealing from shops less, given most are currently shut. “Priti Patel just proudly informed us that shoplifting has fallen during the lockdown. Has anyone told her most shops are shut?”, asked Piers Morgan.
‘We can produce 100,000 PPE masks a day - but the government and NHS don't want them' - Lancslive reports that a Lancashire business has said it can produce 100,000 personal protection equipment (PPE) masks a day - but that the NHS and government have declined to take them up on the offer. Packaging company AH Formes, based in Altham near Accrington, is one of many businesses throughout the country that have registered to offer their services during the coronavirus pandemic. But after two phone calls from the government and NHS on Wednesday (April 22), the business says it was told their supply was not needed, despite being able to produce 100,000 PPE masks every single day.
Amazon has opened a nonprofit store to supply front-line medical workers and others in the fight against Covid-19 with much-needed supplies, including face shields, surgical masks, digital thermometers, ventilators, exam gloves and sanitizer says Bizreports. The supplies have been scarce nationwide and Amazon’s move to open the store last month shows how the world’s largest retailer is lending its supply chain during the pandemic. Amazon’s store, called simply Covid-19 Supplies, is available only to accredited medical professionals as well as government agencies and emergency responders. The store is open to hospitals, federal agencies, ambulance crews, police and fire departments, nursing facilities and physician’s offices. The equipment is in extremely short supply in the U.S., and Amazon told the Business Journal that the store is just the start of the company’s efforts to keep up with demand.
Supply chain news in depth
While passenger flights stay on ground freight rates are flying high - Stat Times reports that while passengers are going nowhere, there’s considerable demand for airfreight. Airfreight is the most expensive mode of transporting goods, but also the fastest, reliable and secure style of moving it. Roughly, airlines handle just one percent of all the global trade volumes but at the same time enjoy 35 percent of its value. In that sense, the pre-Covid-19 world was pretty sure about what sort of goods must move in the ocean and what in the air. But in the world hit by Covid-19 pandemic, air cargo has moved from the premium mode to the super-premium with freight rates climbing new heights each day it says. Demand for airfreight capacity from the West to China is limited, but large quantities of PPE are coming out of China resulting in rapidly growing rates. (Cont’d) According to TAC Index, on April 13, 2020, the airlines reportedly charged a new record price of $9.64 per kg to move cargo from Shanghai to Frankfurt compared to $2.46 on March 9, a jump of 291 percent in just one month. Meanwhile, on the Frankfurt-Shanghai route, it fell around normal rates of $1.17per kg as of April 13 compared to $2.78 on February 17, when the rates were at its peak. The average air freight rate to transport goods from Shanghai to Europe is around $8.65 per kg, while from Frankfurt to China is $1.41. The same for Hong Kong to Europe is $4.66 compared to $5.11 on April 6 and $2.58 on March 9. The falling rates from Hong Kong are reportedly due to the new regulations introduced by the Chinese government in April to clamp down the low-quality Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) exported from the country. The government made it mandatory for PPEs to have customs clearance which pushed the companies to ship them from mainland airports instead of trans-shipping through Hong Kong. (Cont’d) Airfreight rates on Shanghai-Dallas/Fort Worth route rose to $8.72 per kg on April 13 compared to $4.91 on March 9, while Hong Kong-Dallas is at $4.88 compared to $5.79 on April 6 and $3.53 on March 9. On average, air cargo from Shanghai to the US is now available at $6.92 compared to $3.36 on March 9, an increase of 105 percent in one month. Meanwhile the same from Hong Kong is available at $5.55 per kg compared to $3.35 on March 9. Rates from London to the US stood at $4.04 per kg compared to $1.12 on March 9, an increase of 260 percent, while Frankfurt to the US reported $4.12 compared to $5.31 on March 30, when it witnessed a steady increase of 223 percent, from $1.64 on March 9. While on the other side, from Chicago to European destinations, rates reported an increase of 173 percent. From $0.96 on March 9, it went up to $2.63 per kg on April 13. (Con’td) It’s not all good news however, with some people priced out of airfreight moving to rail - and liking it. In the meantime, a large section of cargo that used to travel in the air is moving to more predictable rail route between Europe and China. Stakeholders of air cargo fear that a significant amount of cargo will move to rail, permanently. On April 3, 2020, the freight forwarding company, Davies Turner announced that its weekly rail import service from China to the UK has broken previous records in transit times amid demand spike. Philip Stephenson, chairman, Davies Turner said “The impact of Covid-19 will push many shippers to rethink their supply chains, and that could see a lot more Asia-Europe air and ocean freight traffic moving permanently to the rail.” Coronavirus chokes the drug trade from Wuhan, through Mexico and onto U.S. streets - The LA Times explains Wuhan is known for its production of chemicals, including the ingredients needed to cook fentanyl and other powerful synthetic opioids. Vendors there shipped huge quantities around the world. The biggest customers were Mexican drug cartels, which have embraced fentanyl in recent years because it is cheaper and easier to produce than heroin. But the novel coronavirus that emerged in Wuhan late last year before spreading across the planet has disrupted the fentanyl supply chain, causing a ripple effect that has cut into the profits of Mexican traffickers and driven up street drug prices across the United States. The narcotics trade, which relies on the constant movement of goods and people, has been stymied by lockdowns, travel bans and other efforts to contain the virus, according to government officials, academic researchers and drug traffickers. (Cont’d) Logan Pauley, a researcher at C4ADS, a Washington-based think tank focused on transnational security, noticed a decrease in advertisements for fentanyl precursors. He said vendors switched to selling other products, including face masks and anti-malarial drugs that some doctors and politicians initially hoped would help treat the coronavirus. The drop in exports has left some Mexican drug producers with less access to needed chemicals. Simultaneously, cartels have encountered another colossal challenge: new restrictions on entry to the United States — the world’s biggest market for illegal drugs. Kameron Korte, a spokeswoman for the San Diego field division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, said fentanyl pills in her region now sell for $7 each, up from $5 a few months ago. The average cost of methamphetamine has risen from $1,000 per pound to $1,400 per pound, she said. Similar price hikes have been seen in other parts of the country. Drug users have grumbled about rising prices on online forums. On a message board on the website Reddit, one person complained that prices of fentanyl pills in Phoenix had nearly doubled. “Border shut = less trafficking,” it said.
Supply chain news in brief
Investing.com reports that the U.S. Labor Department issued new guidelines on Sunday for U.S. meatpacking and meat-processing plants that have seen a rash of coronavirus outbreaks, saying employees should be spaced at least 6 feet (1.8 m) apart and screened before they start working. The interim guidance from the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration also recommended temperature checks and the wearing of cloth face coverings as a protective measure. The guidance was issued jointly with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “As essential workers, those in the meatpacking and processing industries need to be protected from coronavirus for their own safety and health,” OSHA's deputy assistant secretary, Loren Sweatt, said in a news release. More than 5,000 U.S. meat- and food-processing workers have been infected with or exposed to the new coronavirus, and 13 have died, the country’s largest meatpacking union said on Thursday. Meat suppliers including Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN), Brazilian-owned JBS USA, and WH Group Ltd's Smithfield Foods have all closed pork plants (example Tyson closure story here). The slaughterhouse shutdowns are disrupting the U.S. food supply chain, crimping the availability of meat at retail stores and leaving farmers without outlets for their livestock.
The U.S. could be just weeks from meat shortages with shutdowns spreading says Bloomberg. Almost a third of U.S. pork capacity is down, the first big poultry plants closed on Friday and experts are warning that domestic shortages are just weeks away. Brazil, the world’s No. 1 shipper of chicken and beef, saw its first major closure with the halt of a poultry plant owned by JBS SA, the world’s biggest meat company. Key operations are also down in Canada, the latest being a British Columbia poultry plant. While hundreds of plants in the Americas are still running, the staggering acceleration of supply disruptions is now raising questions over global shortfalls. Taken together, the U.S., Brazil and Canada account for about 65% of world meat trade. “It’s absolutely unprecedented,” said Brett Stuart, president of Denver-based consulting firm Global AgriTrends. “It’s a lose-lose situation where we have producers at the risk of losing everything and consumers at the risk of paying higher prices. Restaurants in a week could be out of fresh ground beef.” Prices are surging. U.S. wholesale beef touched a record in the week ended April 24, and wholesale pork soared 29%, the biggest weekly gain since 2012. Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems Inc., which has 1,750 stores across the U.S., is working with its ham supplier Clemens Food Group to ensure its supply of pork, something they sell quite a bit of in their sub sandwiches. “We’re backing it up already because of the coming -- we feel -- the coming shortages,” said Peter Cancro, chief executive officer. Executives from Tyson Foods Inc., JBS and Smithfield have all warned that consumers are likely to see impacts at their grocery store. (In a separate story, Jennie O announced closure of its meat processing plant in Willmar, MN - approximately 1,200 people are employed there - whilst the Daily Mail is reporting that meat packing giant Smithfield Foods has said Friday (24th April) that it will indefinitely close its plant in Monmouth, Illinois after 'a small portion' of the 1,700 employees there tested positive for COVID-19).
US Farmers start to kill pigs they can't sell to slaughterhouses due to closures: United Press reports that with coronavirus outbreaks closing slaughterhouses across the country, the American hog industry is running out of space to physically keep a backup of live pigs. Hog farms are so crowded that producers are starting to euthanize their animals. "I really, really don't want to kill my pigs," said Howard AV Roth, president of the National Pork Producers Council, who raises and weans pigs in Wisconsin. "But it is getting close here. I know there are farmers who have had to kill their pigs, farmers are aborting sows. It's really awful," Roth said. "This is our biggest crisis ever in pork production," said Joseph Kerns, the president of Iowa-based Kerns & Associates, a consulting firm that specializes in livestock. "And I don't say that lightly." It is too soon to predict how many farms will go under, Kerns said. But it could be a huge number. "This could have a huge, long-term impact on the hog industry," he said.
Airbus CEO: “The survival of Airbus is in question if we don’t act now” - Reuters reports that in a letter to staff, Chief Executive Guillaume Faury said Airbus was “bleeding cash at an unprecedented speed” and that a recent drop of a third or more in production rates did not reflect the worst-case scenario and would be kept under review. Industry sources have said a new restructuring plan similar to its 2007 Power8 which saw 10,000 job cuts could be launched in the summer, but Faury indicated the company was already exploring “all options” while waiting for clarity on demand.
Emirates Skycargo is to participate in the Australian government’s International Freight Assistance Mechanism which will directly support Australian exporters by strengthening supply chains between Australia and its export markets. Through this initiative, the Australian Government is partially offsetting the cost of airfreight – reducing airfreight and freight forwarding costs for exporters and ensuring businesses and exporters in the country can swiftly transport their produce on flights and to international customers. Over 560 Australian businesses have already registered to utilise the International Freight Assistance Mechanism. Currently Sydney has 4 flights a week and Melbourne 5 with Emirates. Qatar Airways
British Airways is increasing its cargo-only flights from China to the UK, from 13 to 21 per week says Aircargonews. The flights will be operated in partnership with the UK Government and British Airways parent company IAG Cargo. The British Embassy in China is working with the Department of Health to procure medical equipment from China and deliver it to NHS hospitals all over the UK. The flights, which will depart form Shanghai and Beijing, will carry up to 770 tonnes of cargo — including PPE and ventilators — in the hold and, where possible, in the cabin too.
A Beijing crackdown on shoddy medical exports has led to surging air cargo costs and congestion in South China says The Loadstar. Following widespread complaints of defective personal protective equipment (PPE), including face masks and coronavirus test kits, the Chinese authorities have tightened quality controls and increased customs inspections. New regulations include yesterday’s announcement by China’s Ministry of Commerce on strengthening the export quality supervision of “non-medical” masks, including a blacklist of suppliers which failed to gain export certification. “In Shanghai, customs brokers have raised rates for export clearance by up to six times, due to extra paperwork and processing time,” according to Norman Global Logistics (NGL). The company said: “So far this is impacting the Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shenzhen regions, but we expect it to happen in the rest of the country, as at least 90% of all medical cargo will require customs inspection." NGL confirmed claims the new export restrictions were preventing PPE manufactured in the mainland from transhipment in Hong Kong, and “more or less forcing” the cargo through mainland airports. While many governments have enacted “air bridges” to cater for supplies for their healthcare systems, space is still scarce and rates are at a premium due to the absence of bellyhold capacity, said Scan Global Logistics (SGL). “We now have airfreight terminals in Shanghai, Xiamen and Guangzhou on red alert, while Shenzhen changed to yellow, as terminals in these cities are overheated with massive amounts of cargo, particularly PPE,” the forwarder added. Similarly, Flexport describes China’s air cargo market as “very hot”, due to lack of capacity in the air, but also on the ground in warehousing space and ground handlers.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is shipping mail and parcels to ten European countries via ocean freight "to address the issue of limited air transportation resulting from widespread flight cancellations and restrictions due to COVID-19," according to a postal service advisory dated April 23. The first batch of mail shipped to Europe in this way left JFK International Service Center in New York for the Port of Rotterdam April 20 carrying five containers of mail weighing 32,768 kilograms, according to the advisory. The destination countries affected by this change are Austria, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. (Source: SupplychainDive)
Amazon has extended the closure of its distribution centers in France until Tuesday after a French appeals court amended and upheld the Court of Nanterre's original ruling, an Amazon spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive via email — countering a Reuters report that stated the closures would end on Saturday. The appeals court reduced fines for non-compliance from one million euro ($1.08 million) per day to 100,000 euro ($108,075) per day, and expanded the definition of essential goods to include IT and office products, pharmacy and health items, food and beverages, and pet food and supplies, according to Le Monde. Despite the reduced fine, "The potential court penalty outlined today means that even a rate of 0.1% of handling or shipping items that are not included in the judgement could lead to a fine of more than a billion euros per week," the spokesperson said. "Unfortunately this means we have no choice but to continue with the temporary closure of our French Fulfilment Centres while we evaluate how best to operate in light of the court’s ruling."
Drury Hotels, a private, family-owned and operated company, is offering rooms for $59 for truckers at its 150 hotels in 27 states for $59, which includes two daily grab-and-go meals. All but nine locations offer free truck parking. Drury is also offering the same deal to healthcare and government workers. “At Drury Hotels, service is at our core,” a Drury Hotels spokesperson told FreightWaves. “Through June 2020, we are proud to offer a special rate to those working in the government and the health care and transportation industries.”
More than 40 employees lived at the Braskem America plant in Pennsylvania for 28 days to make material to protect health care workers says CNN. Workers at a Pennsylvania manufacturing plant got to clock out and go home for the first time in almost a month after a marathon effort to make material needed for personal protective medical equipment. More than 40 employees volunteered to spend 28 days at the Braskem America plant in Marcus Hook, near Philadelphia, to make polypropylene -- a raw material needed to make N95 masks, medical gowns and other protective gear, CNN affiliate WPVI reported. They went home on Sunday. The company gave them an increase in wages and provided beds, kitchens, groceries, internet access and iPads.
More than 2 dozen oil tankers are now anchored off the coast of Southern California as demand continues to be substantially below normal levels due to lockdowns in almost all US states (video: US coastguard). There’s no way to offload the oil because there’s nowhere for it to flow to.
2020.04.27 02:11 fuzzyyogiFriendships don't need to stop. Conversations don't need to be elusive. Let's talk :)
EDIT: Feel free to drop any other topics that recently worked your brain good. Responses may be staggered but I'll get back to each of you proper. Excited! _______________________________________________________________________________________ So I moved to Toronto a couple of months back and made quite a few successful attempts at meeting people. I've had wonderful moments that are now blossoming into friendships. And I've also had, for lack of a better term, "intellectual one night stands". Those are special to me for their own reasons (basically I craaave mentally stimulating conversations). But then the world went to shit and living with people who are not all fluent in one common language is a little unfortunate but I'm glad that I atleast have some company. My main source of social fulfillment comes from friends back in Melbourne. But time (zones) can be a real bitch and I thought I'd reach out to the Internet again. Why not throw some of my past conversations/thoughts and see if anyone wants to converse ...and...conversely (wink) share their own conversations/thoughts as well. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Since I moved to Toronto some of the memorable conversations I had were Kindness over truthI asked a friend of mine, if she could choose one guiding principle that would have the greatest impact on her life choices, would it be...kindness or truth? And then I asked, if her status in society would affect the choice she would make? All of this might seem a little vague, but its an incredibly nuanced and complex topic. Which is summed up by the question, "Do you believe in xyz (progressive choice) because you KNOW its right or because its 'right' (meaning everyone else is doing it so you're doing it as well)?" The worse the circumstances, the more tribal we becomeSetting aside the the tragic-ness of this pandemic, I was telling my friend that this pandemic was the 'right' level of severity. In the Goldilocks range, if you will. Any more severe and my hunch is that self preservation of individual societies would become more of a priority than global collective survival. My friend believed otherwise and said that humans are designed to cooperate no matter the cost. Whereas I believed tribalism was necessary for our survival as a species and we will always have to keep that in check as the going gets tough. Anyway this conversation took nuanced turns and twists for another 2 hours. A real mental workout. A retrospect of the life lessons offered in shows like FRIENDS, SCRUBS etc and there were a few more topics, but for the sake of keeping this short(ish) I think that'll suffice. These conversations went on for multiple hours because the point was not to prove you were right. Instead, it was to understand each other. it is far more gratifying to understand what makes a person think the way they do...than to win an argument. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ So after reading all this, if you feel like a conversation or wanting to make a new friend, shoot me a message. I was thinking we could set up a Friendship-skype-date with a glass of (preferred drug of choice) and blabber away. To mitigate the awkwardness of anonymity, here's a bit more about me https://www.reddit.com/askTO/comments/ekzxi1/new_to_toronto_in_feb_jumpstarting_the_friend/ Cheers and stay safe <3
